The biggest wapanese I knew was a Chinese guy that went to my high school, he came to class dressed like some animu protag, complete with spiky (and most of the time greasy) hairdo and spent all lectures drawing shitty fanart. He was such a pathetic human being that he made me hate anything anime related for all my teens

Interesting you mention that. My Japanese class has only 4 asians in it (in a class of 20), two of which speak Chinese fluently w/ eachother. It's interesting to listen when I eavesdrop on them.
Almost all the Chinese-Americans I know watch anime and read manga to some degree, mostly the stuff that's highly acclaimed. Only one is learning Japanese.
The characters from the book I used as a exchange student in Japan are nowhere as interesting...
The same can be said of Japanese books for English learners.
