A-are you kidding me? I'm 100% honest here, not even trying to be an internet dick.. The Queen of England looks like a slightly-above-average tattoo on a bicker chick's calf. I mean the proportions are way off as well, it's not pretty. The $5 note is commonly used I would assume as well so I'm sorry to say but good luck taking pride in that currency for awhile. For yet another note, but God please just remove yourself from England and become an alliance rather than merging like us. You can't even travel and work freely in the commonwealth anymore it's just a slap in the face have some strength and self respect.

>>
>>57760577
>Do you think that will happen?
If charles was king for an extended period of time then yes it probably would happen.

>Is there much support for a republic in Australia?
For sure. There was a referendum in 1999, the yes (to a republic) vote was at 45%, which was a pretty big margin to lose by but an unpopular model was put forward to replace the commonwealth, and the PM at the time (Howard) didn't support a republic.

Currently idk what support would be but it'd be under 50%. But there's enough support to make it a pretty close contest. The biggest hurdle to a republic is our natural apathy and "if it aint broke why fix it" attitude.

I'm a republican but I don't want a referendum until the queen dies and I want to stay in the commonwealth. I just believe we should have an australian head of state.

Not really. The functions of the head of state are already codified. They would only significantly change if people went for a presidential republic with an independent executive.
>>
>>57760830
>You just want an Australian Head of State
We do, it's called the Governor General
>>
>>57760830
I couldn't trust the current crop of politicians to be our head of state at all.

There is literally no reason to change other than>muh symbolism.

And even then I like still being a part of the monarchy because it is one of our remaining remnants of Anglo history.
>>
>>57760885
If she had any influence or interfered in our politics we'd get rid of her, I have no doubt of that. But she's just a figurehead (and a pretty popular one) that doesn't do anything, so most people don't really care about the symbolism of having a foreign head of state.

Tony Abbott was born in england and Julia Gillard was born in wales btw.

>>57760945
>There's going to be a massive change if this happens not only in government, but law.
Not likely.

No, that's why nobody is really calling for a referendum atm

>>57760993
>it would be a shame to see you go as we have strong cultural ties.
Yeah well if you want to keep those ties then do something to keep the commonwealth relevant. The freedom of movement thing between us, NZ and canada would be a very good start. Besides we would prob stay in the commonwealth, like canada.

Who is literally the Queen's highest representative in Australia. If we want to dissolve parliament, the GG must write to the queen and get permission. We should just take out the writing to the queen part and have the GG or high court do it. That's what most presidents around the world do.

>>57761085
>There is literally no reason to change other than>muh symbolism.
Yeah which is why, when we've got nothing important happening, and have decent leadership, we should change it. I don't like having a foreign head of state, we're capable of running our country and we do, so the system should reflect that.
>>
>>57761189
>the GG must write to the queen and get permission
That's just ceremonial though
>>
>>57761189
Honestly in matters like that i'm glad the decision goes to a non-partisan head of state. You would rather some political appointed hack or populist president? I just don't get it.
>>
>>57761189
>when we've got nothing important happening, and have decent leadership,
>Implying
There will never be a time when "nothing important is happening". Whether it is economic recession, overseas terrorist threats or otherwise, that is an absurd suggestion. Furthermore, we have had a decent leader in decades and that is unlikely to change. I don't want to become a republic mainly because I know who the major proponents of it are and I am vehemently against them, and because I believe it is a starting point of a slippery slope to abolish all historical ties with the UK.
>>
we lose our banterstamp if we become a republic
>>
>>57761293
Further, look at the flag referendum in the NZ. Something like 20 million dollars spent (quite a bit of money for NZ) for a decision to retain the status quo. That would highly likely be the same result here, except much more expensive.
>>
>>57761253
>That's just ceremonial though
no, it's legal

>>57761275
>Honestly in matters like that i'm glad the decision goes to a non-partisan head of state. You would rather some political appointed hack or populist president? I just don't get it.
No I'd rather a court or non-partisan GG, and the GG is supposed to be non-partisan anyway.

>>57761293
>There will never be a time when "nothing important is happening". Whether it is economic recession, overseas terrorist threats or otherwise, that is an absurd suggestion.
That's what we had in 1999, when the last referendum was held.
>and because I believe it is a starting point of a slippery slope to abolish all historical ties with the UK
I'd rather actual ties, like I mentioned before like freedom of movement, rather than just some muh heritage monarchy arselicking bullshit.
>>
>>57761367
It's legal power that the royals are very aware they'd lose if they used it without public support.
>>
>>57761367
In 1999 there was a recession. And Howard merely called it to shut down republic discussion for the foreseeable future. And even still the referendum was a no vote.
>I'd rather actual ties, like I mentioned before like freedom of movement,
A nice idea in priniciple, but what it would mean is a fuckload of Muslims from the UK and Pacific Islanders from the NZ would arrive here. We don't need anymore people here than we already have, particularly those who don't assimilate and are more likely to cause violence than others
>muh heritage monarchy arselicking bullshit

Sure but it does mean that it is a lot easier for people to move between countries. The only place that Australians would go to is probably the UK, not many will go to Canada and nearly none will go to NZ. Most people will definitely come here, something that is not beneficial to our national interests at all.

>It pretty much is when people who have never been to the UK or met a british person have a love affair with the monarchy and "my anglo heritage".
I'm not sure what you are insinuating. Are you saying that if someone has never been to the UK, despite them being descended from British people, then they should not be allowed to be proud of where there ancestors were? And seeing as Australia is effectively a creation of the UK with some different additional elements thrown in, are you saying that we are completely different?

There is literally nothing from with being proud of your heritage. Many who say that we should be casting away our Anglo traditions are those who simultaneously assert that we should look to the future and embrace a multicultural progressive Australia, something which again is definitely not in our interests.

You know refugee intake is a small fraction of what we actually let in every year, right? Hundreds of thousands of people migrate here annually, and both major parties have essentially identical policies on that regard. This isn't secret information.
The page you linked to seems to be calling for an intake system, not unlimited admission. If you listened to them in parliament, you'd know they don't actually advocate just taking in swarms of people unchecked because it fucks up their sustainable population rhetoric. Even Greens make speeches about stopping boats. They just do it from a different angle.

Legal tender, though it would probably be phased out. The Reserve Bank and the Mint would both be too lazy to call the older currency in so phasing it out would be a process of attrition via exisiting renewal schemes.
If we remove the Monarch from our constitution I expect that we would just slowly bin old portraits of the Queen and the "R" from the front of a few institutions and charities.
