Gorgeous. You went to job, got decent salary which was enough for everything. Medicine, housing and education were free so you lived in a comfy flat without paying for it. Food was cheap and natural. You went to the sea resorts every year for free too, if you are good person you could visit foreign countries for free too. For a rest in weekends there were bars and dancehalls. Religion was nothing. The only problems were censorship (but you always could easily listen to Voice of America or get Current Chronicle and self-issued books from dissidents and intellectuals you know, and high prices on cars. USSR was #20 by HDR so living there was really cool.
>>

This, all 40 of them, and they keep changing flags every 30 seconds.
>>
Awful. You went to job, got lots of monopoly money which good for nothing. Medicine, housing and education were free because nobody sane would pay for them so you lived in a small flat without paying for it but odds were you were living there with your parents and grandparents. Food was cheap, natural and there was never enough. You went to the sea resorts every year for free too if you were a good little commie, if you were a functionary you could visit foreign countries for free too. For a rest in weekends there were bars and dancehalls which looked awful but hey, atleast you could get drunk. Religion was nothing. The major problems were censorship (but you always could easily listen to Voice of America or get Current Chronicle and self-issued books from dissidents and intellectuals you know and risk getting ratted on, and high prices on cars that looked like they were made of cardboard and sometimes they were). USSR was #20 by HDR because they faked ALL the stats.

>life is really really boring
>not a lot to do

>it could take a year to get a refrigerator or a TV
>all electronic and print media has to conform to state censorship guidelines

>some cities are "closed" meaning you need permission to visit those
>if you're convicted of a crime, you have no right to lawyers or presumption of innocence and the verdict has pretty much already been predetermined
>can't elect politicians and they don't have to answer to the populace at all
>religion is either banned or heavily regulated by the state
>you can pick up radio/TV from Western Europe despite running the risk of getting caught
>state TV is just mindless propaganda worshiping the party and how we'll complete the 5 year plan and quadruple production of turnips or whatever
And that's about it.

You just came to the shop and bought it.
>life is really really boring
Tourism, theatres, cinemas, museums were very cheap in USSR, anyone could afford it.
>all electronic and print media has to conform to state censorship guidelines
Media in USSR was way more powerful than it is now. Journalist investigation could lead to a retiring of city major or minister.
>>if you're convicted of a crime, you have no right to lawyers or presumption of innocence and the verdict has pretty much already been predetermined
What? Court in USSR had both lawyers, presumption of innocence etc and were impossible to give a bribe.
>some cities are "closed" meaning you need permission to visit those
As it is now. It's reasonable to make city with nuclear missiles production plant closed.
>can't elect politicians
Bullshit. You had elections both in party and soviets and USSR was ruled collectively by people who were elected in a multistep soviet system.
>religion is either banned or heavily regulated by the
As something bad. Religion was hardly opressed and it allowed us to get rid of many savage customs.
>you can pick up radio/TV from Western Europe despite running the risk of getting caught
No one caught listeners of Voices. You could listen to western propaganda as much as you want.

kek. It was like Great Depression never ended, yet the govt somehow overcame it with strict state regulations like pic related.

For example, I can recall kids playing war on the street who were using water filled condoms as grenades. Yes, it was this weird.

Do they really teach this way in Russia?

You were trying to get to the moon and were BTFO. It's like, being in a marathon and leading up until the 18th mile and then shitting the bed.

Lol. Poland had problems in economy since 70s because the West did everything to destroy their economy to cause a pro-western revolution.

The most difficult thing, by far.

It's like, Canada thinks they make good coffee. Tim Hortons. And then Starbucks comes along, and you know you can never catch up.

ITT: people born in 1997 acting like experts on the subject (not defending communism though, Latinos do this shit all the time on /int/ and /pol/ claiming their military dictatorships were good to live under and shit)

Look up polls on Soviet nostalgia and stuff. In general, the Baltics + Poland despise communism, while Russia is pretty nostalgic and the rest are pretty mixed. It all depends on a number of factors that can't be discussed on only one thread. Such as the conditions of the country before communism, their specific communist regime, trade they managed to engage in internationally, etc etc. That's why people are so divided on it.

Lack of food, clothes, domestic appliances, electronics, basically everything. Lines everywhere, including virtual lines to get something valuable like car (5+ years) or commieblock apartment (10+ years). Ban on international travel and foreign media. Unemployment tax and childlessness tax. Food was natural, without GMO soy protein, but still had natural fillers like cellulose or starch.

What do you think would have happened to video games under the USSR if it still existed? Do you think the state would have made a console and copied Western games + made a few of their own? Or that PC gaming would be the only way to game? I'd imagine that if the USSR still survived, they would have their own internet that's not connected to the internet of the outside world and is highly regulated, because North Korea has a system like that right now.

Honestly, I'd really like to play a Soviet clone of Call of Duty because I know it'd be full of hilarious propaganda.

The famous British spy Kim Philby, after defecting to the USSR, became greatly disillusioned with what he found. In particular he lamented the poor treatment of the elderly in the country, saying "I saw so much hardship going on. I could not understand how they allowed it. Tourism to see all those unkept buildings and disgusting Soviet architecture, theatres whose best plays were those against the regime,, cinemas with awful Soviet movies and an ocassional Western movie and museums of how great communists are
>Media in USSR was way more powerful than it is now. Journalist investigation could lead to a retiring of city major or minister.
You mean once the party got rid of them, they slandered them on TV too
>What? Court in USSR had both lawyers, presumption of innocence etc and were impossible to give a bribe.

Soviet infrastructure was also really poor. Many roads were unpaved mud tracks, vehicles were constantly breaking down, and a lot of agricultural goods rotted and had to thrown away due to an inability to get them to the city they were meant for.
>>
I'm pretty sure some East-Germans have said life was pretty comfy back then. Can't confirm tho.
>>
>>57101954
Czechoslovakia in the 70s-80s was hell. The regime was particularly hard on political and religious dissent and the Stalinist economy was virtually flatline. There was hardly anything to buy in stores, pollution from factories was ruining the environment, and most of the population just had a complete apathy towards their jobs and life in general.
>>
When a ship with bananas or organges came to the port it was announced on national tv in the news.

It was that shit.

I don't know what being a gommie was like, but I was born in 77 in the USA. Even as a young tyke in the early 80's I realized hiding under a desk wouldn't save me from a nuclear bomb. The internet is single handedly the greatest invention during my lifetime. Through it, you can get a good feel for who is bullshiting who. Should WW3 ever break out, I believe it will be against people who have no access and have been bullshited themselves. I do not worry about you, Russia when I go to sleep at night. You do things differently, but you are alright. I do worry about China though. I wish they would become more open to the world.

I can't say for myself but i can mention what was passed down to me from czechia.
They knew literally nothing about the rest of the world so they couldn't run away, At some point (1968-69) tanks drove by in villages everyday to "liberate" the populace, you were taught to hate that person you keep hearing about they call them "americans" and "imperialists" in the classrooms and everything your familly worked to get if you owned more than a dirt hut was taken away and given to collaborators.
>>
>>57102160
I don't think the point of hiding under a desk was to save you from the bomb itself. A desk would however offer some level of protection against falling debris depending on how far from the bomb you were.
>>
>>57101496
These people want communism because it may get little better for them, not like they fully support every idea. In the end everyone except russians got buttfucked when we had it here.
>>
>>57100909
>some cities are "closed" meaning you need permission to visit those

This would be the equivalent of saying "You can't visit San Diego without official approval because it has a US Navy base there." (Kaliningrad and Vladivostok were both closed cities as major bases for the Soviet fleet).
>>
>>57102290
If it was close enough to fell debris, you would die of radiation poisoning soon after.

>>57102324

You guys lived through those days? If so would you say the book 1984 is an accurate way of describing life there?

>>57100909
>if you're convicted of a crime, you have no right to lawyers or presumption of innocence and the verdict has pretty much already been predetermined

Depended on the offense really. Some petty crime like stealing a newspaper wouldn't be handled much different than a Western country. When it came to political crimes or anything perceived as threatening to state security, there was no mercy shown and you were completely fucked.

The catch is that Khrushchev as part of de-Stalinization declared that "The USSR has no political prisoners, only criminals." meaning that political dissidents were considered by the legal system to be criminals plotting with foreign powers to overthrow the state.

The ROC was totally neutered and stocked with clergy who were KGB plants. Meanwhile all minority faiths were suppressed. Judaism especially was totally banned and Jews weren't allowed to emigrate to Israel or anywhere outside the country for that matter.

Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others? All verboten and their practitioners carted off to a labor camp or a mental hospital.

1984 is bullshit, at least when it comes to Eastern European communism. In communist Bulgaria you were never oppressed at work, most people worked for private gains at their workplace or stole shit all the time from the state factories/institutions.
North Korea and a few states however are a different story.
>>
>>57102417
>would you say the book 1984 is an accurate way of describing life there
no
>>
>>57103110
It depended on the country. Some places like Hungary were rather liberal, others like Czechoslovakia were hardcore Stalinist and listening to Led Zeppelin on Western European radio stations would get you in trouble.

I'm not sure about Bulgaria specifically though I had heard it was one of the stricter regimes in that way.
>>
so basically life was better under communism because their country today is a gigantic shithole?

so butthurt kulaks and fascist offsprings are out full force

this is how it was in a village, none of my relatives was member of the ruling party, you could say no if you didnt want those benefits
(just in case butthurt reaches accusation levels)

my grandparents married in 2 churches (both the catholic and protestant ones), they are right in the center, opposite of eachother, nobody said a word

we had a shoe factory, a mill and a steel mill
banks, shopping mall, supermarket, cinema, and a place where mothers could give birth (not a hospital, but there were doctors, i was born there)

you worked and you got by, my parents and grandparents built their own house because the state offered such low interest loans you could do that
there were no shortages of anything i remember, ppl got cars, bought their tellies and traveled eastern yurop
you were allowed to have a bit of land for yourself so ppl used that to make more aside from their salaries

it was a comfy life, too bad it was unsustainable, i mean whoever builds a steel mill where theres no iron whatsoever around

but since the grass is always greener on the other side ppl wanted farmers from yugo, cars from japan and so on

now the village has fucking nothing, everyone is fleeing who couldnt steal their share from the state owned companies when they were closed
