Illiterate African Child Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN—The Swedish Academy, responsible for awarding the esteemed Nobel Prize in Literature, shocked the world on Thursday with its decision to award the 2016 prize to Ngozhani Kirikou, a 14-year-old Nigerian girl who has never learned to read or write. Critics have already slammed the Academy’s choice as “esoteric” and “unfair to those who have spent years in primary school and higher institutions,” but the committee is defending its decision. “We have long felt it was the time to remove the arbitrary limitation that the winner have at least basic reading comprehension and the ability to write words and sentences…Now we can affirm that we have finally eliminated this classist, Eurocentric bias,” wrote committee member Peter Lyarlok in response to the criticism.
