Oslo has shitty beaches, nice parks, a ski resort, forests and cross country skiing opportunities that are all accessible by subway.
In fact, Oslo's subway network is the largest of all the Scandinavian cities... by number of stations. It is, of course, a lot shorter than the one in Stockholm. Although more lines and stations are being planned. Oslo is in general a city that is very much still in development. It's growing faster than any other European capital, and large new building projects are under way in several parts of the city.
There is a medieval fortress, as well. They show large football events on a big screen there.
There are a lot of concerts here, too. And you'll find stand up comedy, too, if you look hard enough. Scandinavia's largest cinema is located in Oslo, too. And there are hundreds of islands in the Oslo fjord, some of which are reachable by public transportation.
And there are three michelin starred restaurants... which is a lot fewer than in Copenhagen and Stockholm. But unlike Stockholm, we have one with three stars.
I don't know if visiting is worth it. I think I've lived here too long to be impartial. But I think I can confidently say that it's not as horrible as most of the posters here would have you believe.

There are also some pretty nice museums in Oslo. The Norwegian Folk Museum and various array of viking and art museums are definitely worth ones time. Some of the largest attractions in Oslo (Opera House, Vigeland Park, Akershus Castle etc.) are also free to visit.
Oslo is small, but it's still fun. I wouldn't come to Norway just to visit Oslo, but I do believe one should definitely visit Oslo when in Norway. There are some shadier areas right to the east of the central station, though. That's one thing to keep in mind.

Public transportation is pretty decent, actually. People like to complain a lot, and there are probably delays a bit more often than they should be. But you will usually be able to get where you want to go by bus, tram or subway (or boat, if you're going to an island).
It's 32 NOK for a single ticket (which allows you to use any kind of public transport in zone 1 for one hour), but if you're going sightseeing, you'll probably want to spring for the day pass for 90 NOK or the 7-day pass for 240 NOK. These options also make it cheaper to go to and from the airport, if you use NSB and not the airport express, because the part of the journey within Oslo is already paid for. I think the airport is in zone 4.
Oh, and buy tickets beforehand at machines or kiosks, because the bus driver will take out his dick and rape you if you try to pay on the bus. (Not literally, but the tickets are a lot more expensive that way.)

Oslo isn't the best city in Europe for architecture, but it isn't void of it either. It practically has everything, from medieval stuff, old 17th century renaissance/baroque, and lots of untouched 19th century mansion areas to the west behind the royal palace and in Frogner, plus a ton of neoclassicism only rivaled by Helsinki. All right in the heart of the city. Then there's all the modern stuff by the seaside, of course.
Only places that are more than walking distance away from the city that tourists would want to visit is the ski jump in Holmenkollen and the Folk Museum, both which are very easily accesible either way and definitely worth visiting if our vernacular architecture is of interest.
