I'd say that there are a few problems with Cyrillic as used in Russia.
1. Л is too similar to П. This is fixed in handwriting. Flat-topped л and д fonts need to be put away.
2. A general lack of ascenders and descenders impairs reading comprehension.
3. The letter T as written m is, frankly, a bit embarrassing. People mistook serifs as integral parts of the letter, and distorted it.
4. In handwriting, letters are too similar to each other. и, л, м, ц, ш, щ, and the i portion of ы, as well as г and ч. Just think of the word милиции.

I'm not an expert but from what I've read so far, pros say "a graphical rhyme" matters. Some elements of different letters should echo each other, letters should have steady rythm, etc. You can see it in Latin, old Cyrillic but not latinised Cyrillic.
