Shenzhen, China

Shenzen, although it is really close.
Panama city just looks too much like Miami. And I hate Miami.

Ping An could be worse tbf.
At least it doesn't have the giant light-pole that WTC1 has.
Still, it needed better coloring. It is too much like an egyptian obelisk.
I hope the recent construction boom in Shenzhen leads to a few new skyscrapers in the CBD. They already had a couple planned.
>>62177153

Chinese cities always look cool as fuck, but when you go there they're just full of these smelly stupid backwards savages. I wish all Chinese people would just die and we could live in these places.
>>62177658
Panama city is like a smaller Miami.
Why is Panama so much richer than its neighbors? The Panama canal provides like 30% of GDP right?
Plus great trade relations and the drug trafficking business is booming.
In the meantime, I'm gonna post geographic pictures.
>/urban/
>posts rural pictures
Sorry. I have nowhere else to post them and this helps bump this thread.

Panama is successful because it has the Panama canal and American protection.
That's the major reason. The differences between it and Colombia can be chalked up to that.
At the same time, Panama has done well with its advantages.
>>62177966
there's a panama city in florida btw

That's why I was upset about Dubai losing it.
Yes I get it Dubai is not a perfectly balanced, "well rounded" skyline like NYC or HK, but still it's a fucking monster with a skyline 10x larger than that of Moscow, it still has a decent density in most of places, it still has mesmerizing Burj Khalifa, it still has it's own unique architectural style(technically the style itself is not so unique, you'll find quite similar buildings in some other cities in the Middle East, but none of them will have the towers as tacky as in Dubai, their tackiness make them instantly recognizeable).
Atleast we would have 2 less or more comparable skylines in the first battle of Quarterfinals but instead we have
>HK, the largest skyline in the world
>Moscow, 10 nice towers and that's all
Posting some more of Shenzhen.
>>62178239
It's the difference between causal architecture anons and you, the norwegian, and a few others.
People just stereotype Dubai by looking at its lack of greenery, hills, or forests. It is called "soulless", "dry", "fake", "cultureless".
All the bullshit adjectives used by /pol/fags and casuals to describe China (and especially Korea and even Japan even though weebs won't say it).
Dubai should have won based upon skyline, but I'd pick Moscow as the better "city".
>>62178404
What a beautiful city, I love how modern all that shit looks
>>62178165
we have the panama canal, others have oil, others have minerals, look wwhere they are. whatever, people always will try to discredit us, saying its drugs, money launder, usa,. dont care t bh. read the article.. fyi we only get canal money since '00, its almost as if we've been a country longer than 16 years
btw, protection from what? costa rica? kek
>>62178449
So funny seeing the CBD right next to literal farms and ponds. They better keep that look because makes Shenzen unique.
>>62178404
Fun fact: Shenzen proper's GDP per capita is now richer than Hong Kong.
HDI is lower, but that's to be expected of a city full of rural migrants.
>>62178508
Sorry dude but we are the major reason Panama is not like Colombia.
I feel bad saying that. I hate when anons claim Japan and Korea are successful because of America.
But our protection, trade deals, and investment are just so important for the different levels of development in the world.
Notice that any country that opposes America, be it capitalist or communist, is either invaded, sanctioned, or restricted from our market.
>>62178547
The Pearl Delta is honestly the biggest metropolis in the world.
It's GDP is more than the UK.
>>62178436
>Dubai should have won based upon skyline
it's not "should" it's a competition, it's obvious there can be some upsets and all but the hatred towards Dubai here is too much
Dubai losses miserably no matter what city is put against
It somehow made it out of the group stage probably because the battle was not bumped enough to get an adequate number of votes(the poll had like ~30 votes)
>>62178526
>So funny seeing the CBD right next to literal farms and ponds.
it's Shenzhen-HK border. HK preserves it's natural/rural areas.
>>62178526
>Fun fact: Shenzen proper's GDP per capita is now richer than Hong Kong.
What? How come so? What's Shenzhen's GDP per capita?
A skyline is such a shit way to judge a city.
>>62178447
True. Shenzhen looks extremely modern. Mostly due to the fact that this city didn't exist 100 years ago. It used to be a fishing village.
>>62178701
>it's Shenzhen-HK border. HK preserves it's natural/rural areas.
Still good.
Also,
>implying Shenzen's authorities haven't protected the natural environment as much as a poor developing country can
Despite the memes, China is extremely GDP/pollution effective for a newly industrial country. They also try to extensively protect the environment. It's just that the local governments are generally ignoring the Central government's edicts, and sell land to developers near cities.
>>62178775
you miss the point senpai, we are not judging any cities here
we are only judging their skylines
>>62178867
>Despite the memes, China is extremely GDP/pollution effective for a newly industrial country.
China now invests more money into green energy than the US, the UK and France combined.
>>62178833
It just reminds me of blade runner at night which is fucking awesome
>>62178754
https://thenanfang.com/shenzhen-racing-past-hong-kong-hub-innovation/
Well, the CBD of 2 million people at least.
Imagine how great China could be if the Communist Party wasn't holding back the Chinese entrepreneurs. They are reforming a lot (despite the memes), but the regional governments aren't carrying the reforms out.
Entrenched interests stand in the way of the Chinese entrepreneurs.
>>62178962
China wouldn't have made it this far without the Communist Party either. They are one of the few governments that can just toss billions at any problem they have and not be met with political opposition.
>>62178775
Tell me how you'd objectively judge an entire city.
How could you even define what the city limits are?
Tokyo is 400 Sq miles. NYC is 20.
Skylines are far easier to judge.
>>62178833
It also has hilarious (well, maybe that isn't the word) inequality like pic related

>>62179064

>>62178643
you dont have to feel bad, i know that americans are so self absorbed that they cant be bothered to learn things and thus accept their simplified prejudices as reality. its like the world is a kids book of stereotypes, wherein youre also the cause of every success story. and theres absolutely nothing i can say to change that way of thinking.
just a correction, our country has very much opposed usa, several times. otherwise we wouldn't have the canal to begin with
>>62178933
Give it a couple years and it'll be straight up dystopian blade runner.
I'll visit sometime next year. I promise myself that every year.
>>62178928
They have an issue with not investing it efficiently though.
China has way too much power right now.
They have 150 GW installed of green wind energy, but only produced 90 GW last year. America with 100 GW installed produced 92 GW.
China really needs to liberalize its energy market.
For example, China has 3 massive state-run energy companies. They have done a decent job, but suck at innovating quickly and serving special customers.
Recently, the NDRC (read up on them) liberalized the oil import/export market.
Now private teapot refineries can import 30% of China's oil and produce their own blends of oil. Since they are producing higher quality blends, they helped China provide to richer customers.
The reason I remain optimistic for China's development is because they are still so fucking backwards. Also, they obviously have (from my conversations with their economists/politicians) the understanding that their economy and human rights are misbalanced and unsustainable. They want to make it a market economy without blowing up the whole machine.
There's been reforms in services, taxes, energy, and finance so far.
The most interesting (and best) reform was a simplification of the tax code. They are pulling black market industries and the shadow banking system in, while simplifing registration, and lowering taxes on services and small business.
>>62179064
>Tell me how you'd objectively judge an entire city.
pro-tip: most tourists and locals don't spend their entire time in a helicopter circling the entire city from above. Streetscapes and neighborhoods are a far better way of judging it's aesthetic and livability.
>>62178643
>I feel bad saying that. I hate when anons claim Japan and Korea are successful because of America.
Sorry to say that but ignorant Americans are cancer of /int/. I've seen Americans claiming that South Korea right now would be annihilated in a matter of days by North Korea if not for the US.
>>62179347
>China really needs to liberalize its energy market.
What a shitty idea.
>>62179312
Well that's exactly what I was hoping you wouldn't say about me.
Nonetheless, I stand by what I said.
>>62179014
Yes. But now that China has industrialized, the old model for the economy and politics is not working as well.
It's much easier to create the stability and economic conditions to build a road or bridge or factory, than it is to incentivize private Chinese investors to support a fast food store, a massage therapy center, or a movie theater.
Xi cracking down on the media and continuing the anti-corruption campaign for a third year, alongside his actions in the SCS, are the three biggest mistakes he has made.
I used to be an admirer but have lost some hope. Still, he has done more good than harm. He's a reformer, but he's also afraid of getting taken down by the entrenched interests. If he can't win the battle in 2017 and gain full power China will be held back.
For example, Q2 2016 figures showed 6.7% growth.
But public investment was up 20% while private investment was 2.8%.
Private investors are losing confidence in spending now, and the SOE's are driving them out. It's hurting China in the long term.
>>62179106
>>62179193
Not sure. I am 90% sure it is Shenzen. Or maybe Guangdong.
>>62179372
Okay.
You didn't answer my question.
This thread is about judging skylines. It's that simple.
>>62179410
We have a lot of cancerous assumptions and stereotypes in America. We are like an entire culture built upon stereotypes and racialization of every group.
It's a fucking fetish to separate every culture and ethnic group up into clear cut cookie cutter groups.
Sadly, I do the same. I pissed off the Panamanian by doing that.
>>62179467
What?
It would be a shitty idea in 1970-2010, but now it is more developed. The NDRC (China's head reform group) has liberalized certain sectors of the Energy market.
That's what I think is smart. For example, the fracking industry and the import/export industry. Those were recently liberalized more.
>>62179347

>>62179552
well, what were you expecting? your comment either means: a. you think any cunt's success is a consequence of usa, because you "allow it", or "allow trade", or even if it trades with usa. but we all know what american hegemony is, and how many countries are living miserably as of now, specially several that receive billions of usa aid (we dont), among those many who are nearer to you
or b. you think usa was directly involved in the management of our country, similar to how it had a hand in japans rebuilding. but that never happened. even if usa had a presence here, it was an enclosed, hermetic base that had little interaction with the rest of our country. if anything, usa has done more to undermine our institutions than help, given the dictatorships and several coups, we've been succesful in spite of you.
even in cases like japan it can be argued wether usa had anything to do with their success, and not their industrious nature.
moreover if you consider countries in either of these, in both cases usa would have more failures than succeses i reckon
if anything, all our succeses are a cause of europe, even spain. included usa. so why would i credit usa, before any of them before? theres nothing to argue, because your comment has no substance anyways look all the assumptions i had to refute from that bs

Nothing. Except that it is funded by state debt.
It is simply unsustainable growth. A sustainable (long-term) growth rate would be 5%.
They just don't want to have a hard landing. If it slows down too fast people will freak out, so in a way it makes sense.

East Asians have a weird thing where service is shit and that's okay.

>>62190682
IDK, other than the Chinese writing on the lights I wouldn't be surprised if that were a mid-sized American city on a coast tee bee aitch.
>>62190682
This one looks a lot better than Shenzhen in terms of coastal city feels. (Actually even better than Shanghai in terms of just coast purely) Do you have some pics for other coastal cities like Dalian or Amoy that are not that well known to the West?
>>62191057
Dalian's skyline is not at the coast.
>>62191057
Shenzhen, even though it has a port, simply isn't built next to the water. It was also a former rice-field so they were able to dig deeper and build heavier buildings than most coastal cities.
>>62191057
Well yeah. Tianjin is the most well known.
It also has a Beidu new area with like 20 unfilled skyscrapers.
China is planning to build way more buildings than it has people. The NDRC just announced a study that showed urbanization plans for 3.4 billion people, and stated that of course that is fucking retarded.
So looks like the construction boom in China is going to stop really really soon.
Personally I don't understand why China doesn't initiate an economic crisis. That would help Trump get elected and would help them fix their economy.
Another shot of Qingdao
>>62191460
>3.4 billion people
China just looks like Japan in 80's waiting for economic bubble to burst. Apparently they don't want an economic crisis as economic growth has been the thing that made ppl to follow CCP than going against it
>>62191368
>Dalian's skyline is not at the coast.
Funny considering the city was built for Russian (and later Japanese) naval base.
>>62191626
>China just looks like Japan in 80's waiting for economic bubble to burst.
No it really doesn't.
Anyway posting some more Shenzhen.
>>62191368
Looks decent, but I prefer Qingdao.
>>62191626
>China just looks like Japan in 80's waiting for economic bubble to burst.
The comparisons are inaccurate.
The NDRC (China's reformers) published the study to emphasize that the plans are for that. Not that China is anywhere near that yet.
>Apparently they don't want an economic crisis as economic growth has been the thing that made ppl to follow CCP than going against it
Of course. Any government would. Currently it has shifted to security and nationalism, and it has worked pretty well.
>>62191626
China is like Japan 1970.
Or like USSR 1975.
>>62191680
People don't realize what Japan's 1990 economy looked like.
All you anons are too young
>>62192677
Fuck off, grandpa.
>>62192428
>Or like USSR 1975.
Some misinformed people compare Chinese economy to the Japanese one before the asset bubble burst but I've never seen before anyone comparing it to the USSR lol
>tfw no hardware/skyscraper capital like shenzhen
ah yes very good, one of my favourite threads
>>62192843
My favorite too.
>>62192677
For example
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_asset_price_bubble
This gives a decent overview.
Suffice to say, China is 1970 Japan. http://www.mckinsey.com/global-themes/china/five-myths-about-the-chinese-economy
But Chinese investors aren't stupid because China is state-controlled. They know they can't push assets too high and speciulate.
Thet makes the economy less efficient and drags down long-term growth, but also stabilizes it and protects it from economic crises.
Japan's Lost Decades happened because of lack of reform. They didn't have the power, will, or even knowledge of how to fix the economy.
If a bubble bursts in China, the Chinese authorities know how to respond (depreciation and bailouts) unlike the Japanese before them.
>>62193060
>China is 1970 Japan
So I should wait 10 more years before visiting?
Can't wait for snowy walks again.
>>62192777
In the sense that it is growing, stable, and state-controlled.
But that it has fundamental long-term problems stemming from its government stifling private business, closing the capital account, and promoting too much construction. It is becoming less stable, and political change is increasing in likelihood.
China is definitely growing 5-6% for another decade or so. The problems are down the road. China Fearmongerers are faggots, yet they also have some good points.

Tbh, it's in a class of its own. A unique case. An economic crisis is not imminent though.

>>62193275

>an American not recognizing Times Square
wat
>>62193557
It's a fair mistake. Tokyo is kind of like Times Square, if Times Square was under the effect of anabolic steroids whilst waving a pulsating erection.
>>62193689
And by that I just mean that Tokyo is one huge billboard

I wanted for every poll to have atleast 50 REEEEEEEEEEE.
>>62193255
Depends. 1970 Japan was pretty awesome as well. They were just starting their tech boom at the time.
You can witness the last little bit of old China if you visit southwest China today.
Wait a decade and it'll be gone. Much like Japan.
Visit China 2030 and you'll see a superpower thinking it is all powerful. Like America in 2003.

No idea. Japanese cultural heritage is really well preserved.

Nah, NYC again. That's in fromt of city hall.
>>62193832
I have the ultimate authority and I say Shenzhen
>>62193862
Uhh this...
Literal farmers in poverty worshipping old taoist gods without phones or television. Traditional villages. Not for-show traditional villages like in most of China or Japan.
>>62193923
Not what I meant.
I'm talking about Old Japan. The Japan of my grandmother.
>>62182241
it is tallinn in estonia
>>62194121
>it is Tallinn in soon-to-be Russia
Thanks anon. The American thought it was Riga.
>>62193557

>>62194061
desu I'm supporting Shenzhen aswell
>>62194118
>Literal farmers in poverty worshipping old taoist gods without phones or television. Traditional villages.
People don't want to live like this just to appease you and not to be "for-show".
>>62194118
Well shit. By that logic, Old Europe doesn't exist either nowadays. Just because people stopped being backwards, doesn't mean the relics of the past are lost. People still farm or fish in the rural countryside, but it can't be helped that there no longer is need for samurai.
>>62193923
I wouldn't exactly say really well preserved. You can't see many remnants of old Japan in any of the major cities aside from Kyoto, but they haven't done terrible either, as a lot of things of value are still around, or rebuilt if circumstances call for it. Something which China technically could do too, but they don't seem to regret the loss of heritage much.
>>62194511
I'm sure the views from that castle were spectacular a long time ago. Now it's kind of horrifying.
>>62194500
>People don't want to live like this just to appease you and not to be "for-show".
I realize that anon. But modernity does change culture. That's a fact.
>>62194511
I get that. Still, the culture is changed by modernity and development. If you want to see 1920 China, go to rural Guangxi or rural Yunnan. That's all I'm saying.
>>62194511
>Something which China technically could do too, but they don't seem to regret the loss of heritage much.
It's partly Communist and partly poverty.
Although since 1974, most of the major temples and cultural places have been remade.
There's also a flourishing or Han era fashion as well as a growth in the regional languages. More and more people know Mandarin, but regional languages aren't vanishing like they did before.
Chinese are great constructors and they are autistically nationalist about their history. So when they rebuild cultural icons destroyed in the war or revolution, they usually do it right.
Then again, almost no structure from before 1800 is the same today as it was back then. Most have been destroyed or modified with the times.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Great_Towers_of_China
For example, most of these were partially destroyed in the WW2. And were rebuilt in the 70'-90's.
>>62194694
I can't imagine it having been much else than vast plains and small wooden houses, though I guess many prefer that to the urban jungles urbanization fostered.
>>62194703
I get what you're saying, but at least a distinct Japanese culture still exists to some degree. All is not lost. Globalization probably hit harder in Europe than Asia.
>>62194703
>I realize that anon. But modernity does change culture. That's a fact.
And that's a good thing.
>>62195158
>Globalization probably hit harder in Europe than Asia.
It's not just "probably". Even modern Japanese culture is kind of isolated. Look their video games industry, it's unique and don't cater to the international players. Same with anime&manga.
>>62195538
It's ironic, though. Europeans kickstarted the mass globalization, and now every culture of the world hit us back so hard we don't know our own from the others. But yeah, Japan is still the most similar Asian nation to the developed west all things considered. Yet it's still so alien.

Globalization is Anglo-led so it is best fitted with Euro cultures.
>>62195874
It got stuck in 1989 mi familia.
Neat, Shenzhen is today's SSC banner.
>>62195538
Funny that Japan's culture is even more isolated than Korea, Taiwan, or China.
Well 2bh, Korea is the most Americanized one in East Asia and I am saying this as a Korean.
>mfw one of my father's friends is a dentist earning like USD 30+k a month
>sending his wife with his kids and make her work as a maid for 2 yrs so that his wife and his kids can get US green card for some sort of special immigration program

It's kinda funny even Eastern yuro who has been free of globalization thanks to the Cold War is quickly becoming more Anglicized
>>62196300
>How so?
Because culture is updating itself to catch up to the new technologies perhaps?
>>62197050
that's a fucking nice banner
I wonder if Ping An has got some cool neons aswell?
>>62197114
>Well 2bh, Korea is the most Americanized one in East Asia and I am saying this as a Korean.
Really no wonder it's as Americanized. Sorry to say that but Koreans have failed utterly to build an actual state, Joseon was incredibly backward and isolated, got subjugated by Japan which maybe contributed to modernization of the country but also heavily supressed you. Then they lost and there came Americans - rich, developed nation which offered to help you, bring investments but also didn't took your independence away.
I didn't mention about one of the most important things. Korea is an ultimate cuck country. It's an eternal vassal, and throughout most of it's history a vassal of China. And when China prospered you did aswell, but when it went to shit with catastrophic rule of Qing dynasty you failed to build a strong state on your own.
Well atleast right now you are a nation to watch and to follow, you excel at many things. It's almost unimaginable that such a small country shares 40% of global shipbuilding market.
>>62198242
>that's a fucking nice banner
Nah, I just posted that for the heck of it. The actual banner up on the site itself is shit, like always.
>>62197050
SSC?
Also, bloody great picture
>>62197114
East Asia has pretty strong cultural traits though. It'll never be more Americanized than it is now.
America's power will wane, and with it the cultural influence as well.
That's for the good.
>>62198242
>because culture is updating itself
Ahh so lets just delete all culture and apply it to the rationality of the free market and technocracy! Yay now we have money but everyone is the same cultureless morass!
>It's almost unimaginable that such a small country shares 40% of global shipbuilding market.
China got rekt by them because they focused on cheaper ships. With the commodity crash and trade plummeting, those ships became unprofitable.
SK is now bailing all their shipyards out though. SK is a lot like China right now in how it handles its economy.
At least it grows unlike Japan...

Skyscrapercity
>>62198439
That's the one, kek. Can't even see there's a city there unless you fullsize it, so I'm not sure why they'd pick that of all things for a tiny banner.
