Maybe it's different here, but when I was in elementary school EVERYBODY watched Pokemon and most people had those stupid playing cards, even though nobody actually knew how to play the game. They just played the game like you'd play with milk caps (throw them on the ground, whoever is closest to the middle wins, or clap them against each other and who-ever has the picture up wins).
The niche fanbase are the people that are STILL interested in Pokemon now, 20 years later.. I think most of the people playing GO now haven't been involved with Pokemon since it was popular on TV 20 years ago.
The audience is also absolutely retarded apparantly, because some US kid has already been shot dead trying to break into this elderly lady's house in the middle of the night because there might have been a rare inside, and the Dutch Railways have issued a statement/request to PLEASE not walk on the railroad tracks attempting to catch pokemon. They got in touch with Nintendo to try and get them to stop having them show up near the tracks.
