Can you write Mongolian calligraphy?

I watched that one, it's really amazing.
I think the Full version in on YT.

RIP, gers are comfy in xodoo though
Btw mongol wasn't that bad. Sure it isn't historically accurate but I would rather that than it being a boring movie.

No

Yeah
>>61914140
No. The government is bringing it back though, or so they say. It's on official documents (like diplomas, laws, etc).
The former commies just got elected but they will probably continue promoting script. Who knows.
>>61914172
Yeah, I think the non-Mongolian actors trying to speak Mongolian was just kinda kek-worthy at times.
I need to move back to UB, lad. Everything here is closed. Hell, even if it weren't Naadam stuff closes at like 10pm, aside from a shitty club or two (but GEE totally played here! duhhh)
>>61914107

that scripts are great, and that calligraphy is most beautiful art in my life.
I want to learn it.

Yeah, things are slowly getting better here, drivers are still retarded though watch out.
At least the actors tried man.

Triggered again, lad.
Gers are honestly fine in all weather conditions.
They have extra layers and a ping (like a front room connected) in winter and during summer (it gets up to 40 where I live) people just take all but a thin layer off and do most of the cooking outside.
Honestly like the other Mongol lad said they are comfy in the countryside. The city gers are shit, though.
>>61914338
I don't really care, the news laws made all of the meme parties pretty much fail, which is kinda sad but whatever. Curious to see what happens for ol' President 'Dorj.
>>61914348
Generally not.
>>61914367
Nah, UB is where more than half of the people love, but there are a few cities - Darkhan, Erdenet, DZ, Choibalsan...none over 100K people but they are still "cities"
>>61914414
People do it usually on phones, but the government wants to switch to script from Cyrillic. Kazakhstan is switching to Latin, though.
>>61914414

I like the script. Just have never gotten around to learning it. Cyrillic is fine. Most people, especially older people, don't have issue with the Russians. Hell, Russian used to be popular here.
A major mining company, GOK, was just sold by the Russians so some people are kinda worried, but whatever.

>>61914633
PRC has no claim on "Outer" Mongolia. They enjoy the buffer status, anyway.
Inner Mongolia uses the script still, which is cool, but there are more Chinese than Mongolians there so...
>>61914524

Question for the Mongols ITT: in the movie "Mongol", how good was the main actor (who's Japanese) at speaking Mongolian?
>>61914414
on the internet, Mongolians already use the Latin alphabet a lot
>>61914581
Cyrillic is difficult..
Mongolian script is comfortable.

>>61914524

>>61914704
Are you an expert at reading the Ancient Chinese Post Stamps?
>>61914784
>how good was the main actor (who's Japanese) at speaking Mongolian?
I mentioned this earlier.
It's kinda like he just memorized lines and didn't know what they meant. If you've seen an opera it's kinda the same way - clearly not a native speaker or even a good speaker, but you get the job done.
Some people were pissed but whatever. There's a lot of butthurt nationalism here over little things.
>>61914763
It's called tamga, isn't it?
It's interesting.
>>61914524

>>61914684

>>61914885
Yes, tribes have them, also a spirit animal.
>>61914848
that's a bit of a shame, I mean really I would think it's admirable that a Japanese person was able to get even decent pronounciation in Mongolian, it certainly must have required a LOT of work on his part. If anything it's a sign of respect on his part, especially since his acting was very good and overall he really showed Genghis Khan in a positive light.
>>61914848
He didn't sound bad, Jamukha was awful.
>>61914784
Surprising OK and understandable, like above Jamukha was pretty bad.
>>61914993

>>61915087

>>61914993
That calligraphy is best in the world.
That's better than Chinese one and Japanese one...probably.
>>61915022
awesome
>>61915030
Yeah, it was really admirable, though. I thought the movie was a fun action movie in all honesty. Other Mongol is right that Jamukha was pretty bad.
>>61915153
Same still applies, mongolian tamgas have Uyghur script in them.
Is turanism just a meme or is it a thing that people in turanic countrys or whatever you call them commonly believe.
How common is drinking Kumis in Mongolia? Is it only in the countryside, or do people in the city also drink it regularly?
Uyghur
>>61915213
yes, it is a thing that people in turanic counties believe
>>61915186
Nothing is stopping you from learning it, online resources exist. Only your resolve stopping yourself, if you really think it's that beautiful go for it. It won't be easy though.
>>61915213
AFAIK there's a little bit of a push for it in Kazakhstan, even by Nazarbayev, it's seen as a healthy alternative against Russification, Chinkification and islamisation.
>>61915256

Thanks lad!
They moved most local Naadams to later in July, though, so no big celebrations where I'm at.
Evidently Chicago hosted a famous Mongolian singer, this dude from the band Khurd, for their local Naadam so that's kinda cool.
Seriously Ameribros should check out local Naadams in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, etc.
>>61916430
12 minutes bro
In mongolian it is Saaikhan Naadarai
Which means Have a nice Naadam
it's a shame that there's no language of mutual intelligibility in the Altaic family, and so people are forced to use English to communicate with one another. Obviously it's not surprising when you consider the geographic extent, but still, it's a shame. It'd be nice if it were like the Romance languages for example, where more or less everybody can at least somewhat understand Spanish.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-gDIjv49N8
>>61916580
>like the Romance languages
If you narrow it down that much then most Turkic languages are pretty much mutually intelligible, same goes for Finnics

>repeating the word but replacing the first letter of the second word with an M
we have the same! second word adds "and stuff" basically
for instance: "gelirken yemek memek getir" will make "bring me something to eat and stuff"
>>61916580
When your peoples spread over an entire continent and over thousands of years it is inevitable. But if a Turanic nation did form. Eventually a mutual language would form, a kind of Neo-Turkic
>>61916555
>Khurd
Kurd spotted.
>>61916660
Mongolbro what would be the best ideology for a turan state?
>>61916580
Who said that there isn't?
If you spoke Turkish an Azeri and even a Turkmen would understand you, maybe even an Uyghur and an Uzbek
The reason why French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italians understand each other well is beacause their languages are from the same branch of the Romance language group
Whereas in Turkic there's Oghuz, Karluk and Kipchak branch
>>61916646
Ok I belive you, sorry for being suspicious
>>61916641
Nice lad. Did you see the Khurd dude?
>>61916649
>>61916653
Damn, that is interesting.
The Mongolian word for flower is also "tsetseg" which I know is close to the Turkish word so Iw as told.
>>61916638
true, I guess it's not a valid comparison I was making
And I guess it's unrealistic for an entire family with such geographic extent to have a single language of mutual intelligibility, just like it would be unrealistic for Indo-Europeans. But at the very least, if there were a lingua franca that belonged to that family and were usable by all members of that family rather than using English, it would be neat.

>This political ideology originated in the work of the Finnish nationalist and linguist Matthias Alexander Castrén, who championed the ideology of Pan-Turanism — the belief in the racial unity and future greatness of the Ural-Altaic peoples. He concluded that the Finns originated in Central Asia (in the Altai Mountains), and far from being a small, isolated people, they were part of a larger polity that included such peoples as the Magyars, Turks, Mongols, etc.[2] It implies not merely the unity of all Turkic peoples (as in Pan-Turkism), but also the alliance of a wider Turanid race, also known as the controversial Uralo-Altaic race, believed to include all peoples speaking "Turanian languages".

since Udmurt never had a Latint script, I improvised on something that seems to combine the spelling of Turkish, Hungarian and Finnish, which seems fair to me. The letter 'y' indicates palatalisation after a vowel, no syllable break. Would be interesting if any Finns, Hungarians or Turks can see something familiar, as Udmurt has lots of Tatar loanwords but is an Uralic language.

in cases where there's too much of a difference you're better off either just having 2 different words, or just choosing 1 (and try to alternate between different etymologies).
For example, if I were to try to combine Spanish and English, and I tried to create a word for "beer", there wouldn't be a satisfactory way of combining "beer" and "cerveza" without making it very awkward.
However, even if I pick the spanish word, it's still understandable.
"I'm at the bar drinking a dark cerveza." Even if you don't understand specific words, you can still guess just with context and the rest of the sentence. And inversily, "Estoy en un pub y bebo una beer." is not hard to understand, even if you don't know what the word "beer" means.
Basically, the focus should be on syntax, grammar and all of the "small words" as well as they key verbs (for example, "to be") which make up the language. The rest isn't too hard to compensate for.

Our histories are intertwined and to a certain extent, our languages. Linguists universally agree on the existence of an Ural-Altaic phylum, even if it is no longer accepted as a family.
As for genetics, we're connected by certain haplomemes, like N for Finns and Sakha Turks and C for Kazakhs and Mongols etc

I can't say it's looking very good, but it probably won't disappear entirely and at least the concept of an Udmurt ethnicity will always be in public consciousness, especially as any amount of Russian (or Tatar) admixture is seen as completely acceptable, so it's easy to 'reboot' one's Udmurt identity if there is desire. Red hair is stereotypic for Udmurts though, so if it becomes too scarce there might be a problem lmao.
