The cape colony was taken from the Netherlands when the country became a French vassal, it was then given back to improve relations but was taken again when France conquered the entire country. After the defeat of Napoleon some colonies that the British had conquered were given back in order to maintain a balance of power. The strategically important Cape Colony was not among those. And aiding the Boers in their much later battle with the UK would have to mean a war which the Dutch would surely lose. That does not mean that there was no sympathy for the Boers, there was a lot actually, many traveled to fight there as volunteers, but a war was simply beyond the Dutch scope.
