Hey, could any fluent Japanese speakers help me out please: I'm using Tae Kim and various other resources to try and learn Japanese and it's going pretty well, actually. The only problem I have (at the moment) is that, in Tae Kim, it says that you can't use the declarative statement [だ]after an い adjective, but how then do you know the sentence is finished? is there no grammatically correct situation in which the adjective would be the last word? I was just thinking if you said それは赤い, you'd need [だ] wouldn't you?

You get placed depending on what a specific board of education is looking for. If the BOE in City X only wants ALTs from the UK, you will not get into City X if you are not from the UK even if you requested it.
Some factors they look at are

For instance, the school I am teaching at has a very strong science program, and I majored in a STEM field in university, which is probably why I was sent there.

Yes, I know that's true, but I won't be teaching little students, it will be a senior high school.
Also, they have told me that they expect me to help the students learn scientific english, and to develop posters/presentations in english.
It is true though, I don't expect to do much actual teaching. After all I don't even have a teaching degree and have never taught school in my life, nor do I plan to make a career out of teaching either.

前ドイツ人から聞いたことあるけど、ドイツだと日本でいう小学五年生の時に、三つ選択肢が与えられる。
一つはHauptschuleっていう4年制のあんま頭のよくない奴が行く学校。
二つ目はRealschuleとか言って、職業知識を得るための6年制学校。
三つ目がGymnasiumっていう奴で、ここの卒業したことがそのまま、大学のパスになる。言い換えれば、ここをでないと大学いけない。
もちろん小学五年生にそんな重要な判断が出来るわけもなく、大概が親の方針や階級で決定してしまうらしい。

まあ大学時代のベルリン出身のドイツ人留学生から聞いた話だけどね。
あと、日本と大きく違うのが、ドイツ人は小さいころから目標を定めて勉強するっていうことらしい。
日本だと大学でテキトーに単位とったり、興味ある勉強を続ける。
そんで就活の時にさてこれが出来るから、どこに行けるかなって感じが多い。
ドイツだと例えば、先生になりたいやつは大学は行った時から(下手したらもっと前から)、先生になるために必要な勉強のみをするらしい。
だからドイツ人は大学出た後に就職活動するんだけど、一切業種・職種で迷わないんだとさ。
