But it's true though. The non-meme answer is simply that we don't have a typical Balkan culture. Our food is not typical for the Balkans, our folk music is very atypical to the Balkans and most importantly we were never politically a part of any Balkan polity until 1918 and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes aka Yugoslavia.
Not only that but geographically we're barely in the balkan and that's discounting the fact that Slovene inhabited territory does not equal the modern Slovene state. In other words there are literally native Slovenes living on the other side of the Alps in Austria as well as the Italian province of Friuli.
But once you get down to the meat of it, it's that the Balkan is associated with not nice things, things which we had nothing to do with historically.

But common people were free in this matter. The truth is that bogomils are reffered to as "christians" in Ottoman administration (while catholics and orthodox were called kuffar) and were very friendly with the Turks.
In fact, Bosnia and Herzegovina in early Ottoman days was the only vestige of the dualist heresy still standing, they survived for another 100 years, but their numbers dwindled rapidly, because most converted over time to islam.
When the Turks came to Bosnia, they also brought prosperity, in fact Bosnians had never seen riches and infrastructure like that. This was what made them convert, they tought it must be the true religion since for the first time they lived in riches.
Also, bogomil heresy was very self-denying when you were perfected, while islam allows for indulgence in the fruits of life.

It all goes back to the days of Ban Kulin, the Bosnian ruler who grew wary both of Hungarians and catholicism, and the hated Byzantines with their orthodoxy.
He accepted the bogomils for the true christians they really were (in my opinion).
Paulicianism survived until the 19th century but the Armenian orthodox snuffed out the last remains of the Thonraki dualist sect.
Also, the catholic Bulgarians from Banat used to be Paulicians until the 17th century. And in Plovdiv there were still straight (unconverted) Paulicians early 19th century.

Which is my point as well. The fact other languages lost the distinction means nothing. They also lost the grammatical dual and a bunch of other Slavic words. Means nothing for Slovene. I don't know why the fact that we retained certain words or whatever is equal to "linguistic terrorism".
Slovene is among the most archaic Slavic languages. I hate to use the word, because it implies something bad even though that's not my intent, but in comparison some other Slavic languages were "simplified" naturally trough time while Slovene wasn't to such an extent.
If we are to "simplify" Slovene it would be the equivalent to simplifying English today from "Im going out" to "me go out" from our stand point. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean with this but I'm sure you get the gist of it.
The question why Slovene ended up as it did and why it retained so many archaisms is another matter.

Most Germanic tribes adopted Arian christianity in the 3-5th centuries already.
Franks adopted Roman orthodox christianity in the 6th century, (German) Saxons, Allemanni and Anglo-Saxons soon followed, forced by the Franks.
So only the nordic Germanics were still pagan in the early days of the Bulgarian and Serbian empires in the 9-14th century. But they weren't tribes fighting each other anymore by then.
Slavs and Balts were the last European peoples to be christianized (not counting nordicks, which come between Slavs and Balts).
