They don't know that there are many historical sites - sure, WHAT THE FUCK, the region is literally 2700+ yrs old and as been a crucial element in western culture - but many of those are left to rot. They don't know that the "designated shitting streets" we all joke about are nothing if compared to the perpetual trash emergency down there - administered by mafia for decades.
They don't know that the HDI in that region is on par with Congo. They don't know all the robbery of public funds, all the degradation. They don't know that any investment down there is like putting money in a black hole.
They only see some beaches, some typical italian restaurant with some funny Apicella singing O' Sole Mio, some typical Sicilian market, some show with the Sicilian "Pupi", and so on and so forth. Only place i've been in southern Italia was Napoli and a village near Sorrento. People were very nice, especially in the villages. Napoli is a very intense city but it's nice to visit. It was a nice trip.
Other place were I've been in Italia was:
Umbria, near Deruta. Ultra comfy, probably my favorite place in Italy. Nice people and nice landscapes.
Tuscany, i was young so I don't remember so much things about it except some museum about torture near San Gimigniano.
Lombardia: some friends of my parents lived around Lecco, people are a less friendly than in the center and the south, but more than in France.
Veneto: My godfather lives in Venice so I've been here every year since I was born. I love this city.
Liguria: Beautiful but people are not very nice (they are much more friendly than those in french riviera though). Genoa is a nice city, but there's a lot of africans here.
