The problem is with Portuguese from Portugal, the accent is waaaay too heavy, sometimes Brazilians don't know what they're saying.

PT-Portuguese also doesn't have the word bunda, which makes their version of the language a thousand times worse.

PT-Portuguese is a literal African dialect. Brazilians retained the open vowels, which is characteristic of classic Portuguese, as that of Camões, usually found in northern Portugal and some isles at the Açores.

Every Germanized dialect from SC sounds awful, and Pomerano in particular is probably the worst. Serrano sounds a lot better. And Pomerano isn't too different from mainland Catarinense, aside from the Niederdeutsch borrowed words that apparently not even Germans can understand, when they're not outright speaking Hunsrik, which is rare and probably more common among the Niederrheiner inbred rednecks living at the deep countryside.

Mainland Riograndense, Catarinense and Paranaense all sound very similar. Those crazy variants are always from the far countryside, or cities like Uruguaiana and Alegrete with heavy Porteño influence.

This is pretty much standard for all 3 states, and I'm certain anyone can understand.
>>
This one is more typically spoken abroad at the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, and still not very different from the standard, aside from being slightly more Spanish-ish and having very open vowels. Posted earlier on /luso/.

Most people can't understand spoken Portuguese because of its nasal vowels. Any culture native to a language that lacks nasal vowels will have difficulties understanding Portuguese, as the sound would be alien to your comprehension and therefore you don't really know how those nasal vowels are linked in a word.

I'm also yet to see a forasteiro speaking proper Portuguese.

You have a problem in European Portuguese that we have a LOT of vowel phonemes. I think we have 18 different ones?

The "a" in "gato" and "sal" are slightly different, with "sal" being ever so slightly lower, and everyone says them differently without noticing. And it sounds weird when you mix them. Our 'R's are a bit harsher than the Spanish and softer than the French and they are not fake 'R's like in English.

Gramatical rules out the wazoo as well. Not to metion arbitrary object genders and no-rule prepositions like "no Brazil" and "em Portugal", despite both being male names, or "Na França" e "Em Inglaterra" despite both being female. Lot of curve balls, good for detecting spies.

>>
>>61630863
People just get mad because most fereigners dont even try to hide the accent, so they sound like the stereotype, mostly the americans and the spanish people, if you at least try to roll your rs i dont think people will care
>>
>>61630863
Yeah, that's great. I'm saying perfection is not attainable, but it's not needed either. We are aware of how hard the language is.

I can't really speak for Brazil, but I think they will share this opinion: As long as you try to speak Portuguese and don't insist on trying Spanish, people will respect it and appreciate it. English is fine, but it's pretty low-effort for a son-in-law in your case, which is why I assume you're trying.

Brazilian should be easier, though, and have more uniform pronunciation rules, I feel. Reading should help, but maybe try some dubbed American tv-shows and/or movies? They dub everything in Brazil, so you should be able to find them easily. Maybe some animated stuff so you don't try to read the lips.

>If people get mad at me in Brazil for speaking with an accent I'm just going to give up and learn Spanish in spite.
Easy now. You don't want to sleep in the couch.

A lot of Brazilians use dubs instead of subs, so they have a hard time learning new languages. Most Europeans (germans, have the same problem. Scandinavians and for some reason Portuguese don't do this and we generally have less difficulties with accents after 2 or 3 weeks of acclimatisation.

>são
Yeah. This, "lh" and "nh" are probably the worst for an English.

The trick to "ão" is to say a regular short "a" (or "uh", as in up) , then immediately block all air flow from going to your mouth to do the ã (like you're immitating a racing car going by, I guess), then slide to the closed 'o'. Nasal words are weird.

Exactly, and it's a LOT more than that if you consider the non-continental dialects. Açorianos for example have a ton of vowel phonemes that are completely alien to me. I can barely understand some of their dialects. Victor Rui Dores made an excellent video on Açores:

And Brazil, despite having over 100 dialects, I think all Brazilian dialects have open vowels, which was characteristic of archaic Portuguese and it's definitely easier for forasteiros to speak/understand, while in Portugal you have really stretched the vowels to the point every vowel sounds like a nasal vowel, which is pretty cool tbqh.

>Lot of curve balls, good for detecting spies.
I'm pretty sure it's impossible to emulate Portuguese, specially continental Portuguese. The only way to speak it like an actual Portuguese is when you're raised in Portugal.

>>61630627
I've met people who have been living in Brazil for over 30 years and still sound completely off. But that's fine I think, aside from being constantly called a "forasteiro" in Southern Brazil or a "gringo" in the rest of Brazil, which some people are very annoyed at. Perfectly okay if you're just learning, it only becomes a nuisance if you're planning on actually living in Brazil, as most people would feel like they'll never fit in and are constantly being labeled for having a forasteiro speech, which is, understandably, really shitty.
>>
>>61632203
That's a great video. I've seen it a bunch of times. The Azores are like hyperbolic chambers for the accents of the people that populated it, through isolation of like 300 years. Really neat, but with access to TV they can at least turn it somewhat off when they speak around here. Otherwise, it's worse than any other dialect, Brazilian or African. Maybe Timor and Macau have worse, I don't think I've ever heard those.

>I'm pretty sure it's impossible to emulate Portuguese, specially continental Portuguese. The only way to speak it like an actual Portuguese is when you're raised in Portugal.

Coimbra master race. I think that's the default or central dialect. At least, it has the shortest hamming distances between the rest of the continental country. Lisbon and their "VermÂlhos" should learn.

It's insane to me how accepting Americans are to foreigners, or at least what I experienced in my life. I don't think I know anyone that would ever insult or attack a foreigner based off their speaking skills or their accent. Maybe I'm just naive. >>
>>61632673
It's not offensive though, it's actually pretty natural for us even to label each other based on region. I'm always called either "Gaúcho" or "Sulista" when I'm visiting Brazil outside of the southern region, as anyone can very easily pick my accent. Heck, we can easily pick the dialects within the states and municipalities and label them like "de Uruguaiana", "de Passo Fundo", "Pomerano" or "Serrano Colono" for example, all those native to Rio Grande do Sul only but still very distinct dialects.

And the reason we still label each other and outsiders is because we don't have as much immigration here as you do in the US, not even in Southern Brazil, as we pretty much stopped receiving migrants, except for a few Portuguese moving to S. Brazil, but they're not really labeled outsiders but rather it's as if they're just coming from a different region rather than a foreign country.

>It's insane to me how accepting Americans are to foreigners
Well, since you've had continual immigration over the years, it'd be hard to find people around you who don't personally know immigrants or are children of immigrants, so it'd be pretty hypocritical if you minded that sort of thing.

European countries in particular are much more attached to their country as a land, whereas Americans are attached to their country as a set of values. It's why you care so much about your flag and your anthem, whereas we don't really care for ours to the point of putting it in bikinis and trucks and stuff. But you're 200 years old now and you've had enough that you're starting to go into a "us vs them" mentality soon.

I've been to the city of São Paulo twice and it's not quite like that unless you're exploring through the shithole neighbourhoods within the city, not even the state, in the same way I view Chicago, Detroit and the states of Louisiana and Mississippi as the epitome shitholes and far worse than anywhere in São Paulo.

And outside of the city, which is probably 3% of the entire state territory-wise, it's a great state in every aspect.

Considering you're from Rio de Janeiro I don't think you have the right to look down on anyone, not even the deepest shitholes in sub-Saharan Africa, tbqh with you. Rio de Janeiro is likely the #1 shithole in every imaginable way, with the south of Rio "perhaps" being an exception.

It's amazing how when you're travelling from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro via freeway Dutra people ALWAYS warn you of the favelas in between and how we must be cautious with the "red zone" where they throw large stone blocks on the road to cause accidents and steal the victims.

my completely biased and ignorant view of Brazil is that theres no way Chicago or Detroit are as bad as Rio for example. I feel like theres really really bad neighborhoods in those cities but as a whole the entire city isn't bad. I see documentaries where theres open urban warfare with drug dealers that have FALs and M16s in favelas. Like I said I don't know the exact statistics, I'm going to look more into this. I'm sure I'll be in good hands and I wont be taken any place too bad.

On a completely unrelated note, on a scale of 0-100 how retarded am I for wanting to go into a favela for shits and giggles. Is this something I just don't fuck with at all?

>>
>>61634137
Depends on the favela

Some favelas have decent cop presence
Some have vigilate groups
Some are ruled by drug dealers
And in the worst case scenario, it's disputed territory.

Just randomly walking into one is 100% retarded
>>
>>61634412
>Tropa de Elite
My girlfriend showed me this movie when I was high as fuck and it was scary as shit. Like my entire life I thought Brazil was like this beautiful country full of ass and palm trees, turns out it is you just sprinkle in a little bit of little black kids ready to die over cell phones. I literally had no idea drug dealers actually controlled favelas like feudal lords

>>61634381
If I'm feeling adventurous I'm going into one with my girlfriends brother. It's going to be a game time decision
>>
>>61634641

>>
>>61634742

>>
>>61634137
Nowhere in the world is nearly as bad as Rio de Janeiro, and I ain't even joking. Maybe Northeast Brazil, as they're not only leading in criminality rates but they also lack any infrastructure. At least in Rio de Janeiro you have gated communities that could be seen as isolated enclaves of civilization.

And the fact that 90% of all media comes from Rio de Janeiro only makes it worse for the rest of the country, and probably the main reason every other state wants to secede from the country so we stop being compared to that burning inferno that is Rio de Janeiro.

>Is this something I just don't fuck with at all?
You'll end up being kidnapped.
>>
>>61634742
So more retards don't go in there out of fear, I assume.

You have to understand that Brazil is a literal third world country, with some huge developmental issues, and their cities are actually rather nice, which means the bad places are REALLY bad, in order to bring their index down.

You're the worst even in comparison to the rest of Brazil, including every single state, Rio de Janeiro far worse than the entire nation, every single state hates your guts, not even northeasterners tolerate you. The worst part of it being that you're actually proud of your despicable existence. In all honesty, Rio de Janeiro could be nuked today and nobody would ever miss you, if anything, we'd throw a party nation-wide and celebrate a new national holiday.

It's a botched developmental issue, when immigration and population grow much faster than the economy. The US is past that stage, but you also had/have it. You just call it "ghetto" and "Detroit". It eventually goes away when the country stabilises.

Because the English are better at management than the Portuguese and didn't miss on the industrial revolution, their colonies grew better. But the Portuguese and the Brazilian suck at it, and much prefer inventing/discovering than developing, so when something reaches the minimum functioning state, we leave it alone and go try something else. Then it eventually goes to shit.

You'd need an apocalypse or a war in your territory for it to get as bad again.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Your only colonies that turned out well are located in Southern Brazil, and, not surprisingly, where the ones subject to heavier European immigration to colonize those unoccupied areas. Sure, you lost a lot of your cultural influence, but on the other hand you earned a place to be proud of, and also the only place in Brazil where you're welcome.

The problem with Rio de Janeiro/NE Brazil and those shitholes in the USA has nothing to do with scarcity, it's a genetic problem. All those shitholes are always, 100% of the time, overwhelmingly negro or negro-admixed. You can throw as much money as you want on those places, they'll never become developed because it's a problem with the population, not the local economy.
>>

>Good Education and Health go a long way to avoid spending money elsewhere, I feel.

The problem here is American education has been declining for decades despite more and more money being pumped into school, and being more socialized. In the 1940s, Americans had one of the highest standards in the Western world supposedly.

Sure, Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately your dream of turning this entire country into a favela isn't going to happen. In fact, Deucher is expecting an official referendum for southern secession in 2018, if not earlier, that while ALSO considering São Paulo, and every single other state (surprisingly, including the northeast) are also supporting our cause and they're also expecting to becoming independent republics in the future. Again Rio de Janeiro proving to be the epitome shithole of an entire nation the size of Brazil.

Deucher have said numerous times "we're not going to completely isolate ourselves from Brazil", by shutting down all trading, building a giant wall, etc. We'll keep everything the way it is: energy/food/military supply distribution, trading, etc., with the only difference being that we'll become 3 distinct republics, and recognized as 3 different countries, with our own laws and way of governing ourselves, and, perhaps most importantly, with our own economy away from Brasília and this corruption that plagues Brazil.

>>61636628
"Southern Brazil" is used just to refer to the region, as the 3 southern states Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, but once we secede we'll become 3 distinct republics under the old names we previously had during our brief independent history: República Riograndense, República Juliana and República do Paraná, unless we decide to change something afterwards.

I wouldn't want a "South Brazil" country cause we're too different from one another, culture-wise. I'm from Rio Grande do Sul and I feel a LOT closer to Uruguayans than I do to other southern Brazilians tbqh. Would be a lot better to restore our ties with Portugal also, so we can strengthen diplomatic relations between us and help each other out. Brazil has to go.

That's bullshit and you know it. Brazil is a huge farm and that's it. The Northeast used to be rich when the price of the sugar (it's main plantation) was good, then the sugar price dropped and they went down hard. São Paulo became rich because of coffee plantations, then industries came to Brazil and those coffee plantation owners invested in industries and guaranteed a monopoly for themselves in Brazil. No rocket science there.
