My family lived in an area that was heavily German and my home state of CT almost had German as an official second language and yet supposedly I'm one of the few whites with German ancestory. Everyone is supposedly Irish or Italian despite some looking like a Third Reich propaganda poster.

My family always says German, but the only German part of our family came indirectly to America, as they were German immigrants to England first, and then the rest of my ancestors are basically all British, but still they say German if asked.
The English language belongs to all of its native speakers. Also, General American English is phonologically, grammatically, and lexically closer to the English of the seventeenth century than Received Pronunciation and most dialects in the United Kingdom. Does this mean that British English is worse? No, but it means that you cannot think American English is some butchered version of 'correct English.' There is no 'correct English,' and if your argument is purely based on which is closer to the original, then General American English beats you anyway.
(Clarification: American and British English have both changed since Early Modern English, just in different ways. Overall though, American English is linguistically more conservative. You could make an argument for either way, but if you add up all of the features that both varieties have changed or kept, by most standards American English is more conservative.)
In the end though, everyone should be proud of the their native language, and there is no 'correct' or 'incorrect' usage of language. If any of you disagree with me on this point, I encourage you to study even rudimentary linguistics.
