I can also recommend walking from Kurama to Kibune north of Kyoto, and visiting the temple en route.
Enjoy the night life in either Osaka or Tokyo, any other place is not worth your time if you don't know any good izakaya you can go with Japanese acquaintances.
Osaka has a nice castle, but mostly walking around doutonbori is nice.
Because you're relatively close, also visit Himejijou.
Don't forget to go to Nara as well, for the deer and the Toudaiji.

You can expect terrible heat, but mostly high humidity. Sweating will be a completely pointless exercise.
Just make sure you always have something to drink with you. Don't buy the brown tea bottles in the convenience store, it is not ice tea but actually really bitter Japanese tea.
Shorts and t-shirts are regular tourist attire, nobody will judge.
Japanese will be dressed in general good taste, but whenever they go on vacation themselves they also dress like the most stereotypical tourists imaginable.
