I think It's because of the hostile weather they are subjected to.
See, there are only so much things to do in your garden when you're freezing balls
You end up spending more time inside, and it ends up with you trying to find new ways of not getting bored and scratching your head to expand your range of indoor activities.
It's actually quite a revealing experiment on the human nature if you consider that ultimately they never found anything better to do than getting drunk
