As for regional dialects, I'm not too sure. I've only been to Taiwan, so I wouldn't know.
As for 就, there are a *lot* of different uses of this word. I'll focus on (what i think) are the most common two:
First, it can be used as an "If. . . Then" statement. Like so:
如果比沒有做功課,明天考試就會得到鴨蛋!(If you don't do your homework, you'll get a duck egg (zero) on tomorrow's test!)
Secondly, it can be used for saying one thing comes immediately after another:
他吃完早飯馬上就開車到職場。(After eating breakfast, he immediately drove to his workplace.)

Japanese also has tones, and they differ between Kansai and Kanto. They aren't absolutely necessary, but they make it a lot easier to distinguish words in my opinion.
Japanese also has a lot of homophones, but it's almost always clear from context which word is meant. I vaguely remember there were two terms with the same pronunciation that both had a relation to food, but apart from that there usually isn't much doubt.
I guess Mandarin has been going the same way. Often there are words with the same pronunciation, but if it's not distinguishable by tone, it would still be by context. There are even words with both the same pinyin and tone, and you don't mix those either. 做 (do) and 坐 (sit) are both zuo4 for instance.
What's going on here? we all spoke chinese, why can't we just get along instead of fighting over some bs...
