The amount of stuff true depends on the school really, some kids are super into it and take rivalries seriously. What films are you basing it off of
I went to a comfy suburban high school right outside of New York City
There were social groups based on interests, but it was not hierarchical, i.e. nobody gave the "popular kids" much more respect than other groups, they just associated with themselves
There was always a few outcast students who could not socialize well and were treated shittily
My school did not have a lot of school pride because our sports teams sucked. We kind of felt like were above all of that.
