Thanks. Everything I write in Japanese feels awkward in some way, though I can never put a finger on it. On top of that I get most of my grammar cues from media instead of real life conversations. I bet an actual trip to Japan would help a lot but I haven't had the privilege.

I don't see how that has anything to do with it. We don't have to pay extra money to go to a juku while in school and then study ten hours a day for a test. By the time we graduate high school we are already prepared to enter college. If anything, it seems like you need extra resources to enter a prestigious school here. You can graduate a public high school in America prepared to enter Harvard. No extra tutoring on the side required to even have a chance.

And this is factually wrong. The top schools in America like Harvard and Princeton have need blind admissions. So they admit students before they know how much they can pay. Many top schools even have entirely no loan financial aid packages where they guarantee you will graduate without loans. Look it up. The poorest students at Americas top schools pay literally nothing to attend. And none of them had to attend a juku to get to a level where their academics are enough. They graduated public high schools already academically equal to the rich kids who went to private schools.

If you're an American citizen you would qualify for need blind admission. And you can talk about affirmative action quotas but that doesn't at all mean it is overall easy to enter Harvard. It's extremely selective.

the uni first selects a batch of students two or three times larger than their capacity.
then they call the students to their campus and make them solve a few, very hard questions on Japanese, math, science, etc
you get admitted if your score is high
america
you submit high school gpa
you submit sat
you submit extracurricular activities
then admissions officers take into account everything
if you are in a high school in the most run-down neighborhood in Detroit where kids sell drugs during lunch time and gang rape girls for birthdays and you got 1800 in SAT, you did a great job.
if you are in a private boarding school full of white rich kids you maybe better get more than 2300 to be considered
in the end they both have a shot
a japanese student from a rundown neighborhood would not get such considerations. he still needs to be able to solve those mindboggling questions just as well as rich kids if he wants a shot at Tokyo

I see how the admissions system is different but I think you're givIng too much importance to an imaginary scenario involving affirmative action that isn't always the case. You might have people judging your lower admissibility in the context of your background but I'm also saying it's possible to have a higher score on the sat than 1800 even if you just completed high school properly. It's totally possible to be entirely just as admissible into Harvard regardless of your background.

Because they weren't good enough. And that might be because they weren't ACADEMICALLY good enough. The fact remains that it's possible to have been prepared with just a high school education. They either weren't good enough sctudents academically or they fell short somewhere else. No one is saying everyone has a chance to go to Harvard. And no one says everyone has a chance to go to 東大. i think you are thinking the bubble you've been living in can represent the world.. not all public schools are up to the quality of the ones you've attended. the world is vast and even within one country there are thousands or perhaps millions of worlds.

but i do think the fact that japanese unis don't take into account gpa is responsible for juku's dominance. colleges dont care about gpas, students dont care about gpas, they dont care about school classes that much, they just go to juku after school, so school teachers have no motivation to provide quality classes (the kids dont give a fuck anyway. lets just read them textbooks) to prepare the students for hard university exams. when a student looks to find quality preparation in public education, there is none, thus he also has to go to juku. a bit of an unfortunate vicious cycle
it is a problem because increased education costs cause of these private services make people reluctant to have kids
korea used to select students like japan. we've been adopting american and british admissions systems these years. our juku industry has been on decline

japanese education system is more terrible. Sarah (american poster working as an english teacher in public school in oita prefecture) said she is being bullied by japanese teachers around her because of she complained about the education system. she also said there are student bullies in her class but teachers are ignoring them. I felt really sorry for her, I was glad she said she met some nice people too though.
