We really just think of Canadians as America 2.0. I live in the Northeast, so most Canadians speak and act exactly like us anyway, so we do not see them as being very different.
Really, Canadians that come to where I live are not perceived as having any accent. No one would think they are not Americans unless they specifically said they are.
