Our national anthem comes from a time when Germany was a conglomeration of small states, ranging in size from a single small town to a modern-day German federal state. The song was and is actually about overcoming our differences and working together for the greater good. Too bad the first verse could also be interpreted as extremely nationalist, when it was actually just about unification being the greatest goal.
