Exactly. If one party is expected to take up a lot of weight for the sake of everyone else, then the thing will collapse if they get "greedy" and pull out. Which is pretty much a free rider problem.

Like, in theory the EU is meant to offer security to everyone if people hold up their end of the bargain, it's just that the bargain is too jilted towards successful countries like England, Germany, etc

Yes. Ironically it was the Brits when America wanted independence.

Brits also got really angry at china and fired at them until China shut itself off. But China was pretty mad as well here.

National butthurt is really nothing new and probably dates back thousands of years.
