Most people have a misconception about why guns are allowed in America. The primary reason is not that we need to defend ourselves on a day-to-day basis. The reason for the second amendment was so the citizens of the United States would have the weaponry to overthrow the government if necessary.
If you think that your government deserves it's power simply because it is a government, and not to fairly rule and protect it's people, then ban guns.

I believe that out viewpoints are differentiate because of the different situations that we are both in. The idea of a society that the government should fear the people is exactly what would lead leads to states such as Somalia and Liberia (at least here in Africa). The intended reason for government(in the West) is to protect its people and make the lives of its people easier. To do this governments are granted a lot of power. If they abuse this power, they need to be replaced.
Even if we are currently living a happy life, that does not guarantee that we will in the future. If our government becomes a tyrant we need our weapons to overthrow them. If we ban guns now, we might be forsaking the future of our children.
