I'm thinking of learning Spanish and traveling South American.
Is there any benefit to speaking the Spanish of Spain over the Latin American dialect?
I'm British, so it might be expected.

If you use the Spaniard accent everyone will think you're a faggot.

Don't the accents vary a lot within Latin America. Isn't Argentinian closer to Spanish than it is to Mexican?

The main difference in the dialects is in Spain they use the vosotros conjugation which is informal "you" plural, they never learned it in any of the Spanish colonies because they had to speak formal to all of the Spanish conquistadors because they were higher ups in the society, also Latin American Spanish is more simplified, but they use different words that have the same meaning across the different parts
