According to animal rights organizations, this is especially egregious because there's not even that much demand for whale - the Norwegian government is simply paying fishermen to hunt them anyways, defending the practice as their "Viking culture".

Nature is far from useless. There are entire markets that evolve around the advertising of these creatures and their natural environments. Killing either off for the short term benefits of food/space fucks us up longterm economically (destroying markets) and naturally (food chain disruption, climate change). Heck, even our ice cream trucks sell whale beef, it comes by my door every Saturday (http://nettside.isbilen.no/?id=56&title=hvalbiff-). Great meal if prepared properly, my parents used to eat in all the time when they grew up. I personally prefer other types of meat, but support the industry 100%.
2014 was an exceptional year and the best whaling season since 1993 in terms of tons hunted. Naturally, with the bans on exporting the meat to Japan, EU and NA, our whaling companies struggled to get rid of all the meat (demand estimated at 500 tons, whalers hunted around 700 tons), but managed to do so through heavy price cuts.
