Artistic people tend to be people who think outside the box, and traditionally leftist thought has not been the norm. Historically, supporting progressive politics was a sign of being different or open-minded.
Of course, that is changing now. Mainstream media is leftist, so in many cases simply being left wing is as much a sign of going along with the crowd as thinking independently.
Now, the reason for most mainstream artists being left wing is simply that their audience is left wing (as a result of the mainstream media being left wing) and they need to pander to them to make money.
