Yes actually, Western Anatolia was part of the Greek world and inhabited by Greeks going back to the Bronze Age. Now, granted, there were other people living in other parts of Anatolia (Lydians, Phrygians, Carians, and other post-Hittite Indo-Europeans), but by the end of the Hellenistic era, all of the non-Greek Anatolians were completely assimilated and basically completely Greek in every way. During the Roman Empire and onward it was basically THE Hellenic East. Everyone in Anatolia considered themselves Greek, spoke Greek, were culturally Greek, were educated Greek. By the time the Turks came, there was literally no criteria by which Anatolia wasn't overwhelmingly Greek.
For that matter, note how different people from Turkey look compared to other, more pure, Turkic populations. Look at a Turk, and then look at, say, a Kyrgyz or a Turkmen. That's because, for the most part, the conquerers interbred pretty thoroughly with the locals. Now, granted, there were other parts of that mix. Modern Turks are mostly a mix of Greeks, Armenians, Kurds, Arabs, and a relatively small amount of Turkics, in terms of heritage.
