The colonies were rich and prosperous until the independence, the average Mexican criollo (40% of the population by then) in the XIX century before the independence was richer than the average German of the time. The exploitation is more a myth than anything, 80% of the production in Mexico stayed there, the other went to the Spanish Crown (quinto real) not really to "Spain" (we were all Spain) which in turn was a money used to pay the troops all around the Empire and things like that, the Spaniards in the peninsula were also taxed. Nueva España was even richer than peninsular Spain, and the independence of the colonies disturbed all the former parts of the Spanish Empire because we had a closed and a very interdependent market.
The drug cartels, the guerrillas like the FARC, the Maras, the favelas, all the wars and civil wars and communist, socialist and fascist revolutions they had since then is their fault. The criminality levels between the Latin American countries and Spain are like the night and the day, Spain has a murder rate as low as Japan and much lower than the UK or France while Central American nations or countries like Venezuela lead the world in murder rates. Also, they have been during half century a region of proxy wars and revolutions by the major powers of the cold war, the USA can't escape the blame with shit like the School of Americas, to be honest.

France, specifically Napoleon, betrayed us and left us without control of our colonies, which were inspired both by the US and by France to start a revolution and independize.
Even before that, France made secret deals with the brits during the sucession war, basically castrating spain.
Hell, if it wasn't because of the EU we'd probably be like our colonies right now, since that's pretty much how we often were since the sucession war.
Bu the worst of all? Our shitty french kings, going all for centralization and fucking up our everything, as well as driving our colonies away from us. Surprise, during the few years spain had no king, we made a constitution and had improved our relation with our colonies, and were about to grant them their independence-with-alliance, ala british colonies. As soon as we kick napoleon out and the king is back he throws the constitution to the trash and starts warring the colonies to get them chained back to spain. And of course, let's keep milking Cuba to their last drop of blood! Which is pretty much what made the US start a war with us and get our last few colonies and sinking us into cultural depression.

If only we had stayed together, we could have had a chance at staying strong and developed. But not even the colonies themselves could manage to make their dream of an united american country come true, too much infighting.

New world colonialism is different from African/Asian colonialism. Outside of the Philippines Spain didn't have much of the latter since they were irrelevant by the time it was happening. You have to compare American/Australian colonies to each other.
The Anglophone Caribbean is roughly on par with Latin America, while US/Canada/Aus/NZ have far higher standards of living than any ex-spanish colony.
