All are taught Swedish in schools, but maybe one in a thousand ever learns it past the "jag heter *your own name*" simply because it has absolutely no use in the everyday life.

I have nothing against Swedes or Swedish, but what I can't stand are the jew-like fennoswedes who thin the public blood to keep their locally useless language on life support for god only knows how long.

What does "most popular" even mean?

Damn sure that it is French (an Spanish) by learners since you have to choose a second language in higher education and the normal choice is French with Spanish becoming bigger the last 10 years. When I went to school there was not even an option to take Turkish. For speakers (on some level) it will be the same since there are more people with an A-level education than T*rks.

I lived in Finland all of last year, and you're quite downplaying how common Swedish is. I was actually quite surprised by how it is treated there - better than we treat French in our English provinces and French is 20% of our population overall.

That 5% number is for people who speak Swedish as a first language at home - but you're quite downplaying the amount of Finns who speak Swedish well, and who really did stick with it through school. I met a good handful of Finns who spoke Swedish who were not Finlandsvenska. It is not a useless language. No language is useless. You sound like me when I took French in school, and then I gave it up, thinking it was useless. The opportunity to learn another language is a very good skill.

Pic is one taken where my relatives live, in Ostrobothnia - or as you'd call Pohjanmaa I believe.

As I said, the nation state and national identity came long after that. People primarily identified with their village, family or province. There's was a lot of people living in Sweden proper that similarly didn't think much of the fact that they were Swedish. It's completely backwards to apply our modern day notion of the nation state to the past and you'll never get a clear picture if you do.

The nobility oppressed everyone, not just Finns. Sweden at the time wasn't a very nice place for any low born, it was poor and miserable.

That's all very nice but it still doesn't change the fact that finnic people were identified as a separate group from swedes within the kingdom. Admittedly in foreign countries they didn't make any kind of distinction and referred to finns as swedes, like in the case of daniel cajanus.
>>
>>60735904
>More like that we want to identify us as an own nation thus the negative attitude towards swedish language
I get that, but if you have that sort of attitude towards history then you are bound to misinterpret it. There was no Finnish national identity until around the mid 1800s. You can't look at history and pretend that there was. I'm not saying that they identified as Swedes, they probably didn't. But they sure as fuck didn't identify with modern Finland either.

>you clearly recognized as uncivilized eastlanders
This special snowflake shit again? You don't think that the people in Stockholm thought very highly of people living in far away provinces? You think Scanians were highly regarded? Or the Northerners?

This is virtually always the case in large countries at the time. Far away provinces are less valued than the core of the nation (which happened to be the area immediately surrounding Stockholm and Åbo (Turku) at the time).
>>
>>60736034
And so were many other groups in Sweden. What's your point? We still don't see people from Scania being properly Swedish and they don't see themselves that way either. But they're still Swedish at the end of the day, even though they're a bit bullied for being half-danish.

Laugh it up, my poor uncultured friend, but the Old Catalan of that time was exactly the same language as Occitan, the language of the troubadours.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitano-Romance_languages

>During the Middle Ages, for five centuries (8th to 13th) of political and social convergence of these territories, there was no clear distinction or separation between Occitan and Catalan. For instance, the Provençal troubadour, Albertet de Sestaró, says: "Monks, tell me which according to your knowledge are better: the French or the Catalans? and here I shall put Gascony, Provence, Limousin, Auvergne and Viennois while there shall be the land of the two kings."[2] In Marseille, a typical Provençal song is called 'Catalan song'. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/04/07/finnish-was-the-second-language-of-sweden-for-centuries-now-arabic-is-overtaking-it/

>Parkvall's study focused on native languages rather than second languages, which he says are a better judge of what languages are actually spoken in a country (while English is widely spoken in Sweden, relatively few are native speakers). According to Sveriges Radio, in 2012 there were 200,000 people in Sweden who spoke Finnish as their native language, while 155,000 spoke Arabic.

>Parkvall told WorldViews that the influx of refugees and migrants from the Middle East has shifted the balance in favor of Arabic over the past few years. Given the lack of hard data, it's hard to say exactly when Arabic will overtake Finnish, Parkvall said, but he offered an estimate: "Sort of now."

The "tota hora que oiran" line is a mannerism of the time. It's hard to translate but it would be something like "always you hear this" or "if you hear this". Kinda the same with "vaja-los lo cor", wich roughly translated would be like "the heart goes with them" it would probably be something like "you can heartily believe" in a way that sounds like a vow, although it could have a different significate.

>E tota hora que oiran les batalles e feits d'armes, vaja-los lo cor que totes les victòries estan solament al poder e a la volentat de Déu, e no en poder de gents.

>That finns never were swedes
If you're going to discuss history then please leave your modern day narrative where it belongs: in the modern day. Being a Swede is a very modern notion. As I said and that I can only assume you must have missed, the notion of a national identity is a modern one. Most people in Sweden back then probably didn't identity very strongly with Sweden.

You make it seem as though we invaded the country Finland. There was no fucking Finland. The Finns might have had more in common with each other but they were largely dispersed.

But you're right, they were still Finns and they didn't stop existing. I'm not suggesting that. What I'm saying is that being "Swedish" never necessitated speaking Swedish, looking like people around Stockholm or sharing their culture. Indeed most of Sweden didn't. Sweden was a collection of different people, speaking different languages and having different cultures. Swedish might have been the majority language but it was far from the only language spoken in Sweden. For god sake, Swedish was only made our official language in 2012.

Once again, this notion of "one nation, one language" is. a. modern. one.

If you are going to argue that Finns were never Swedes then you'll also have to argue that Gutes are not Swedish. Scanians are not Swedish. The people of Jämtland, Härjedalen and Bohuslän (historically Norwegian) are not Swedish. Lapplanders are not Swedish. And so and so forth. As you can see it rapidly gets ridiculous and if the only reason these people are Swedes today is because they're part of Sweden, then by extension the Finns back then were Swedes, too.

Ultimately what made someone a Swede back then was an allegiance to the crown. That's all the king and nobility really cared about.

The other line:

>E qui ab veritat guerreja e va, Déus lo exalça e li dóna victòria, e que ab poques gents fa vençre e destrovir moltes qui ab supèrbia e malvestat van e es fien més en llur poder que en lo poder de Déu

And who with truth fights and goes, God exalts him and gives him victory, and with few people he destroys and makes victory over the many who with arrogance and wickedness trust more in their own power than in the power of God.

But Finland only has 5.4 million inhabitants compared to Sweden's 9.6 million, so the murder rate numbers are correct.
