Polan has awful PR, and bad national brand.
Instead of promoting out old architecture, culture and history it's always the bad things that get the most spotlight. It's sad, if you ask me. I'm glad some people are curious enough to check how reality looks like.

Met one in Spain and all he talked about was how gr8 democracy and Poland are while bashing the fuck out of Russia and how they're all subhumans with no culture or respect for democracy, most famous "Russians" were all secretly Polish, and how Polish culture is superior to all cultures in the world except American. It was all pretty pathetic tobh, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him as he ranted on.
The other Poles I've met aren't as extreme, but they all showed traces of this at some point in the conversation.

I've visited Poland years ago and I liked it.
Being them catholics I expected to find many churches and religious buildings, but saw very little.
So I sadly realize how much destruction they suffered during WWII.
Very good people, but I had the impression of a poor country, not really in the sense that they lack in money, but it seemed to me there were not really peculiar places, monuments, that make a country unique.
I thought this was due to WWII damages.

Well, Warsaw was pretty much rubble after the war so there's indeed barely anything left. Kraków made it through though in a decent shape. Never been to Piotrków.
A lot has changed in the last 10 years. For starters, there are finally some proper highways. Mostly with just two lanes and the network is rather sparse, but you can actually move between the major cities now without driving through shitty villages.

What Slovakia is known for here on Polish unis is that you offer a PHD title for money for the even dumbest of people. People who normally wouldn't be able to be PHD in Poland go to Slovakia pay few thousand euros, write some bullshit, and get accepted and a PHD title even if they're half-brained.
For me it was always Slovakia that was the redneck, dumb one desu.
