Supposedly originally based on the older Romanesque Nidaros Cathedral from the 11th century, and later converted into a Gothic cathedral under and after Norwegian rule.
Interior looks pretty spooky

Indeed. Kirkwall in general is a pretty nice town, and one of the few places on the British Isles where you still can find some medieval colonial Norwegian architecture.

I really am tempted to do it...
>>60541255
Do it. I want to see comfy Russia.
A serious question : what do you guys feel about modern architecture ; especially le corbusier work ?
>>60541353
I dont mind it as long as it is isolated from traditional architecture. Brasilia is a good example.
>>60540825
Though Stavanger Cathedral is also cute and really old
>>60541476
But Brasilia had literally zero traditional architecture to begin with
>>60540773
Better pic
>>60541591
Thats why I said it is a good example. What I mean is a bad example would be trowing up modern shit in European cities surrounded by traditional architecture.
>>60540862
The city is nice, its people not so much.
>>60541652
>>60541696
Hm fair
But if the an old city needs an old building what should we do?
And trying to replicate old buildings isn't a good solution because of false historicism
>>60541806
>>60541879
>>60541934
>>60541353
I like good modern architecture.
Le Corbusier wasn't a good architect as long as he was designing those notorious early commies and proposing the destruction of Paris in favor of his commies.
Although his small scale early modernist works were pretty good for their time, all things considered.
>>60541825
I think there are still new styles that still fit in with the old and dont look wildly out of place. Like much of Poland has relatively new buildings that still fit the traditional character. I dont have any examples though since I very rarely save European cities.
Montreal btw
>>60542000
Villa Savoye is beautiful
>>60541335
Bad meme. You could've at least chosen a Catholic Slavic country.
>>60541353
Modern stuff seems a bit more varied than Le Corbusier, not as barebones anymore. Snapped this the other day in a new area, there are some old industrial brick buildings there so I guess the brick is supposed to reflect that but then they've thrown those gimmicky details on the houses like the unorderly balconies and color highlights. I suppose that's the most they can do with the budgets
>>60542209
Surely Russia must have some comfy areas?
>>60541825
>And trying to replicate old buildings isn't a good solution because of false historicism
I don't even see an issue with this, the buildings look plain nice so I don't see why we can't build in the same style just because it's old. Meanwhile architects are recycling their designs for the past 50 years all over the world, isn't that just as bad
>>60542028
What's your opinion about this?
>>60542254
Here's another building with black balconies thrown around similarly. It's in another town though
>>60542297
Yeah, North Russia is bretty comfy from what I've seen. They have wooden churches there.
>>60542371
Having modern architecture next to traditional styles doesn't concern me as much in the new world because traditional architecture is more so the exception unlike Europe. I would rather the leave the traditional building as a standalone though.

>>60542328
>Meanwhile architects are recycling their designs for the past 50 years all over the world
Well, this isn't really true. Modern architecture and planning is getting both "edgier", and more traditional at the same time. There's a vast difference between stuff from the 70's to the 90's to now.
I don't think we should replicate older buildings either, though. Thing is that they often look cheaper than actual buildings of the era they try to mimic, and I believe we should try creating something new out of the architecture of the past, instead of copying it. Kind of like every "neo" style tried combining the original style of architecture with modern aspects (of their time) and thus creating something new. Art Nouveau was also a nice short-lived product of bringing the past into the now in a smooth manner.
I know post-modernism tried/tries this, but only a handful of post-modernist structures have turned out nice since its introduction. So it's trickier said then done, but post-modernism also took base in the modern architecture of the 80's, so what would a style with the architecture of the present day be?
Portugal is comfy and underrated
>tfw you will never live in Madeira ;_;
Mexico City
>>60542854
Would kill for a neo-neo-classicist period in architecture tbqh.
>>60542328
> I don't even see an issue with this, the buildings look plain nice so I don't see why we can't build in the same style just because it's old
because people will try to replicate these old buildings using new materials , which might not work all the time , along with cost factor
>>60542886
Portuguese cities are pretty odd. Lisbon and Porto for example are more reminiscent of Italian cities than Spanish ones.
I wonder how that happened.
>>60542854
>so what would a style with the architecture of the present day be?
I'd say whatever else is in the vicinity. I think this one is a really successful one, it fits in with the old brick and mortar houses but it has a clear modern spin
>>60542854
>Thing is that they often look cheaper than actual buildings of the era they try to mimic, and I believe we should try creating something new out of the architecture of the past, instead of copying it
Fucking this
Problem with post-modern is that some of them manage to create "theme park" versions of old architecture than an actual "new look on the tradition"

do you have any laws regarding green buildings ? or anywhere in europe ?
>>60543245
There is some truth since FLW was more centered in the United States while Corbusier, Gropius and van der Rohe where looking to the whole world.
Hence the name "International Style".

Yeah I believe we have some energy regulations since it gets so cold during the winters. So buildings are generally well insulated, recently constructors also seem to like including some small windows since they leak less heat. The solar panels in the pic are a total gimmick though, there's no way they'll generate a lot of energy

they will participate a little ; but you're right : it's not enough
it's funny that sustainable architecture is more about gimmicks rather than actual sustainability

I don't know how it is in your countries but here sustainability is more of an investors bait than anything

Quebec City
>>60543175
Another problem with replicating old architecture is that it often is more expensive while also being more unfit, meaning that giving the building a more "modern" morphology would definitely take way more advantage of its ubication (better lighting, better structure, more energy efficient, etc.).

>>60545189

surrounded by high-rise buildings
>tfw you don't live in Amsterodam
>>60545431
That way the house can merge better with its environment, and it provides an incredible view.
I think the real trend is making architecture blend with its surroundings, even when a building isn't in the middle of a forest or whatever, the architect will try to make it blend with the town/city where it is located, using local materials, recycling patterns, using traditional colors, etc.
>>60545783

I don't really know, honestly. All larger firms have their ups and downs, though if I were to choose, I guess Mad AS, just for being the most chill of them.
Not because I'm a particularly huge fan of all their stuff, but they're one of the few large firms that actually interact with the Norwegian community over at SSC and also often provide HQ renders and such, which I think is nice.

I don't know. Might be the roof, colours, arcs, low height or kind of how it blends in so peacefully with the green surroundings. In Asia it's also common to build long buildings by rivers like that.
