Sorry for the late reply koreaboo but this is what I meant about the difference between how japan looks and how japan is
https://edinburghnapiernews.com/2011/01/26/%E2%80%98japan-high-tech-image-low-tech-reality%E2%80%99/
Japanese zoning rules to make comfy streets
>>60487936
Though some of his points hold true, I'm not sure how he could unironically think he'd find robots walking around in Japan. Japan is just a normal country, with some cutting edge tech, yet also some lesser tech aspects to counter them out, with some areas more developed than others. That's the reality of it. He also acts like Tokyo is the only city in Japan that's truly modern, when in reality, every larger city follows the same standards Tokyo does. And the electric car part might have held true back then, but as of now, Japan has one of the highest number of electric car owners in the world, with the highest number of charging stations per capita.
What really boggles me here though, is that he claims there is no fast rail. Which there is literally everywhere except Hokkaido (which I'm going to assume is the "Northern Japan" he mentions). So basically, he was sent off to rural Hokkaido and expected the same standards as Tokyo. And yeah, it doesn't work like that. That's something that applies to all countries. Rural living will never be like urban living. I don't expect anywhere in Finnmark to be like Oslo, just as you probably don't expect living in Toronto to be like living in Iqaluit. Japan have their priorities too in relation to population, and Hokkaido is simply not as big as the rest of the country.
And thus, he generalizes. "All of Japan is like this because where I lived was like this and the reality didn't live up to delusions I created for myself". This seems to be a common trend among English teachers that go there, though.
I mean fuck, my own country doesn't even have rail in the north, and we're rich as fuck.

>Robots, high speed trains, electric cars, and cutting edge electronics; you know what country I’m talking about, right? Japan. But, move away from the bright, hi-tech lights of Tokyo, and you will find none of the above anywhere to be seen.
>high speed trains
>you will find none of the above anywhere to be seen
Gotta wonder what they offer in the UK for him to be disappointed by that aspect
>>60487936
the fuck is this idiot talking about. too long and sounds too try hard.
japan has ever kept a bunch of low-tech stuff even on purpose, and both in private and in public. a good example is electric wires. and a bunch of people from low tech dilettantes to normal teenagers preserve old stuff.
how can a person be this much serious and get the wrong idea about high tech crap in japan. and let me say one thing, aside from obvious high tech ones that have a sci-fi look, actual high tech things and landscapes at least i feel it is in daily life here in tokyo are different from what hes mentioning.
>>60493243
Well, the UK probably does have slightly higher standards of living, but it doesn't have more to offer when it comes to high speed rail for sure...
How is this even a competition?
Moscow has a clump of skyscrapers, same for paris. Seattle skyline has jack shit besides the skyneedle.
Chicago is so vastly superior to the other options
>>60493845
>a clump of skyscrapers
Well, yeah. That's how a skyline is formed.
>>60493993
By one clump of a few blocks?
>>60494368
Essentially. That right there is no less of a clump, just a wider one.

but it usally become target of terrorist
>>60496112
I doubt there is any threat anymore
I'm most possibly biaised but la defense has a really singular and well organized urbanism and most of (not all) the buildings looks cool. Urbanism is unique imo as it'a built around a lot of square and each place has skyscraper with a different architecture style contrary to anglo cbs wich are planned around streets (don't know if it makes sens ?)
Moskova city is really nice but not large enough yet and lack low and medium rises
Chicago is GOAT but you'll find the same urbanisme and similar (not as good tho) architecture anywhere else in the us
Seattle is neat but that really bc of the mountains in the background imo
So yeah i would pick ld but all of them are good
>>60486161
Except maybe Frankfurt all European skyscrapers are newer constructions. All the ones in Moscow are literally brand new paid for by the government - not a single skyscraper existed before.
>>60494493
Yeah, blocks and blocks of skyscrapers vs a superblock with a handful of towers
>>60496743
It has to start somewhere...

>>60497788
Commieblocks are awful no matter the style. They were alright when the other buildings looked similar, but now that everything looks so sleek and modern these things are just an eyesore.
>>60497617
What building is that, looks fokking nice. Is it real granite?

I mean, regarding what has been built since the 60s, chicago still has really fucking nice post modernism and nice high tech but for most of the building it's normal us architecture. Nothing really interesting regarding the urbanism for what I know too
Still best skyline in america by far imo but I just find LD more intersting
>>60497992

Elevated subway throughout the downtown.
Two and three level roads downtown
Boulevards that connect all the large parks
Coast/beach that is all public parks
because of commie block's shit appearance
the seoul city gov make a regulation that
you greedy pigs build beautiful block
I will post some example
>>60498214
At the end of the day it is all subjective but row after row of commies that all have the same design, same color, and are the same height look awfully bland and soulless. Kind of like the stereotypical American suburb.

I wouldn't really call this interesting urbanisme
In LD each distric is built around a square with a lot of artwork. Each district has a slight difference in architecture style and you can quickly go to the center of LD from anywhere
La def follows the anthens charter with a separation between transport (under the esplanade) pedestrian and between workplace, shops, ways of transport and housing.
LD follow also a lot of urban axes of historic Paris (axe historique from the louvre and axe of the champs de mars) so it's also fully integrated to the rest of the city
Chicago is ""just"" a huge distric with some really cool buildings right next to your random modern or international skyscraper with nothing original aside from some really cool buildings and the size of the loop.
Sorry for bad english
>>60499092
no it looks like honeycomb more
>>60499121
>Chicago is ""just"" a huge distric with some really cool buildings right next to your random modern or international skyscraper with nothing original aside from some really cool buildings and the size of the loop.
But that isnt true at all
There are a lot of neighborhoods in Chicago with a distinct style of architecture
As well as numerous architectural significant structures throughout the city
>>60499121
Also the layout of the loop and the elevated subway downtown are definitely unique characteristics
And multi level roads in a downtown are also quite strange
>>60499288
Chicago has such pretty neighborhoods. Shame about all the nigs. Hopefully it is gentrifying/will gentrify more.
>>60499389
>And multi level roads in a downtown are also quite strange

>>60499441
Oh tuna~
You gotta save bigger pictures~
>>60499529
>>60499629
Full meme roads
What cities, countries, etc have the best urban planning?
>>60499288
Sorry I wasn't clear I was speaking strictly about the business district. There isn't a specific area of the loop with distinct style (like neo classic) for what i know.
>>60499389 yeah okay
Wouldn't say the subway have that much of an impact on the rest of the urbanism tho :)
I mean does it really influence the disposal of the buildings ?
seattle
>>60499866
>I mean does it really influence the disposal of the buildings ?
Uhh yes absolutely
Why wouldn't it?
>>60499844
A nice as grids look from the air, I'm more into an "organic" growth kind of guy, so I prefer Barcelona's older town (the dense parts disrupting the grid) from a purely pedestrian perspective.
But then again, those can hardly be called planned.

Can we talk about how Americans get neoclassicism just right?
>>60500504
Do you enjoy it there? Is there anywhere you'd rather live, or are you happy as you are?
>>60500026
it sure does
but not as much as of a very contraining plan of urbanism organised by two institutions (défacto and épadesa) such as LD's that:
-define at least 4 generations of towers that have specific rules to follow and will be built at the same time (60s/70s/80s/90s) in the same architectural style
-strictly separate housing spaces/office spaces/ entertainment and shopping places/ ways of transport
-separate the pedestrians from the transport (trains and metro as well as tunnels betweens the towers right under the esplanade and cars and buses another floor under the trains)
-install art pieces that also follows specific rules to integrate in the city
-work so the distric is well seen from any major axis of the rest of the city
-work so the distric is itself separated in several smaller district each with specific artwork/architectural style/function (office, shops...) organised around a square or a park
and much more
doesn't really compare to chicago's weird subway or multi level road (wich LD alos have anyway). Chicago still is your average american cbd built following already existing roads. And the coast and public parks don't count for shit anyway. Like wich city doesn't have public parks ? Not an outstanding urbanism
Only the architecture of some buildings is remarkable
pic related is the space under the esplanade. On each side there is a mall and acces to the buildings. At the end you'll find the train station.
Right under it there is all the roads
>>60500600
not bad everything I need is in here except mental stability , I want ranching in Alps
there looks like comfy and relaxed
>>60500073
Did they add the red stars after the revolution? And if so, why are they still there?
>>60501439
>Chicago still is your average american cbd built following already existing roads.
No it wasnt
Chicago was wiped out by a fire and completely rebuilt on a masterplan
The parks system was designed all at once, with every major park connected to the other with wide park like boulevards. Like, how you can discount something like that while counting
> -work so the distric is well seen from any major axis of the rest of the city
Like it a big deal is laughable
>-strictly separate housing spaces/office spaces/ entertainment and shopping places/ ways of transport
Chicago tried this, and it didnt work so good.
>separate the pedestrians from the transport (trains and metro as well as tunnels betweens the towers right under the esplanade and cars and buses another floor under the trains)
Chicago has the same
>-install art pieces that also follows specific rules to integrate in the city
WOW
>>60501880
And if you're going to say that chicago has no large developments following a master plan, which is what I think you're getting at, then your wrong on that count too

>>60502959

>>60501880
why are you trolling me like this ? :(
Chicago still is built following the fucking simpliest plan possible like any random american cbd
pic related is the map of the loop. Even if you wanted you couldn't do more common and unoriginal. Are you telling me it's a different agencement from kansas city or whatever dixie shit city ? still blocks and straight streets. Whatever
> art pieces not being an important part of the city
lol you dense ?
but at least ld doesn't have a fucking metalic turd as the most emblematic artwork of the city, am i right ?
>-work so the distric is well seen from any major axis of the rest of the city
>Like it a big deal is laughable
of course it is sadly every fucking american city apart from the cbd look like the same tastless suburban shit so why am i even expecting you to understand that integrating modern architecture to paris is hard. maybe if every house in the country didn't look the same artificial shit you would understand ?
>The parks system was designed all at once, with every major park connected to the other with wide park like boulevards. Like, how you can discount something like that while counting
woaw :3 such an intense unique and innovating approach ! I wich we the french would have boulevard in paris !
LD too have kind of the same system connecting parks to each others. We call it promenade de la défense (0.4 miles long) and there also is the coulée verte wich go through la défense (7.4 miles long). I didn't mention it because it's irrevelant and I stupidly thought every cities had parks but hey it's america
anyway ld urbanism is more interesting
Chicago still has a better skyline but urbanisme-wise it's not really original
>>60503536
pic related is the promenade de la défense connecting the Arch to the square Jules mansart.
