Actually they tried to do away with the written language and replace it with Romaji (Japanese with Roman letters) Due to the typical weirdness in translating Japanese to English, this didn't work out.
Sometimes I wish they simply tried making them put spaces between the words commonplace. It would make the language much easier to learn.
