I don't get uncomfortable from American friendliness. A lot of Europeans have prejudices about the US and vice versa. Some things are legit, others aren't. I guess both sides think the other one is arrogant and in a way that's true. We both think that we are living the best way. In reality, both have their advantages and disadvantages. It's a rarity to see americans. Last time I met a black guy, I asked him if he was from Jersey, because that's the first thing which comes to mind for some reason. Turned out he was. He tells me he's a musician and he's had a good time here etc. Tells me a joke that I don't get immediately and says he only wanted to brighten my day then he stopped smiling and looked a little disappointed and left as if in a hurry. It felt like I owed him something because I didn't laugh at his joke, I felt tired at the moment having talked to hundreds of others and it was then quiet. I can't conjure fake reactions like that.

I appreciated his small talk, I do that all the time it's no issue talking to strangers. It was just the way he left. Telling a stale joke smiling, then wiping his smile off instantly, leaving as if he had the look of 'what a waste of time'. When others tell jokes here they cause laughter because they are genuine and sincere, not in the sense you laugh to be polite. After then they keep smiling a little and say, have a good weekend or something to that effect. At least this is how MY local culture works.

It's confusing when social interaction takes unexpected turns. I have a good friend in Seattle who I met abroad. There's nothing wrong with him and he is genuinely funny, we share internal humor etc. Though at first it was strange since we couldn't 'read' eachother.
He says himself that americans are very friendly and try to be polite, but when it comes to appointments and meetings they come up with excuses not to attend. Which means he has a bunch of dishonest shits for friends or that americans are mostly interested in shallow friendships. That's where my prejudice on americans comes from.

Americans are friendly to people's faces but they're incredibly bitchy behind their backs. One of the problem with American friendships is that they are very shallow. It's why Americans have no concept of banter. If you make fun of your "friends" in America, they'll get very upset and fall out with you. Over here, we form real friendships.
