Canada has the worlds longest land border with the worlds largest consumer power. Australia is more vulnerable in that a naval blockade would devastate them. they know this, so they just bough french submarines.
if Canada can reach naval parity with Australia, they will win after a long trade embargo. otherwise it will be a stalemate since neither country can invade/occupy the other.
Australia's best option is to keep their naval trade routes protected while engaging in political and economic espionage against Canada. Canada is vulnerable to both, since it has very secessionist regions like Quebec, and no gold to support the Canadian dollar.

they wouldn't "side with" Australia. They'd secede when Canada can no longer afford to bribe them into staying. Canada can barley afford to keep them during peacetime. They definitely wouldn't be able to afford it during war time. Alberta could also secede when they get fed up with carrying a disproportionately large amount of Canada's tax burden. I don't think Alberta would join the US though (although it would be a way to get the pipeline, i think they would prefer independence rather than US statehood).
