I see the makeup of cities (like Vilnius, Lwow etc) in mid to late 19th century like the result of a successful assimilation because most of the people who lived in these cities in the past were of higher parts of the society and were probably ukrainian, belorussian or lithuanian ethnically, but since they were more wealthier and lived in the city they were culturally assimilated into the polish culture.
Then with the end of serfdom in mid 19th century in the empire of Russia which improved the mobility of lower classes, started to make a new middle classs and people starting to gain the idea of a national identity with the rise of nationalism increased the amount of ukrainian, belorussian or lithuanian amounts in the cities.
