Biggest piece of advice I'd say is to do your reviews and study everyday with Anki because if you miss a day then it gets a little messed up.
Also I would highly recommend the reddit subreddit /r/LearnJapanese. It's even more helpful than this thread or the /a/ threads especially. Good luck! Once you get started and just continue going it gets way easier. The worst thing you can do is give up and take a break. 頑張って!

Have at least an MS, or better yet a PhD, get to N1 level of fluency, and then go beyond that and learn physics vocabulary. You'd need to be accreduted to teach at a university, but you might be able to possibly get a job working in a research team if you have the language skills and a good resume. Once you are fluent (and possibly before then), look into what annual meetings physicists hold in Japan, and go to them to get an idea of what areas of research are hot, who works on what, and to try and network.
English-speaking expat groups can get you some friends quickly after you move over there, but the constant English use probably won't help much in driving you to really buckle down on learning Japanese.

Like people who graduate high school and would need a generous scholarship to study abroad probably are not going to be able to compete on the same level as Japanese high school graduates.
So I feel like it's a really high hurdle set up already.
Like if you're 18 years old and have native Japanese ability, as in you can take content courses in Japanese with no problem (which is what they want to ensure the student's success), you either have a Japanese parent or you had lots of money to spend on good classes and planned way in advance.

Well, in my case, I really want to learn Japanese to fluency, but my family is kinda poor and they can't really afford to send me to Japan as an exchange student, so this scholarship is the best option for me.
Last year, I tried to apply to some american universities and even got a 1700-something on the SAT, but, all of a sudden, depression hit hard and I just gave up. The process for studying in Japan seems a little more relaxed though, so I've got my hopes up about it.
