I've never met an illiterate, and I live in East St Louis. I've met people who suck ass at reading, but never someone who cannot outright read. Must be Appalachia.
On my brief visit on america i noticed at least 1/5 adults couldnt read a sentence. They seemed to read singular words, but when confronted with an actual sentence, they would ask someone to read it for them.
