Gaps are cancer, especially once parks are added between every single building. There should be a working city between those towers, something that proves this is first and foremost a place for humans. Parks are fine, but they shouldn't be everywhere. Make designated room for them. This is a city, not a suburb with skyscrapers. Not every building needs a backyard.

China needs foreigners and immigrants.
I don't get why they don't start accepting Cambodians, Laotians, and Vietnamese that want to become official citizens.
I've heard talk of them issuing a "Chinese ethnicity" card to all people who can trace Chinese ethnicity. This would allow them to visit China easier and to immigrate in easier. It also builds a sense of national identity among many overseas Chinese who are pulling away.
Would be a smart idea.
>>60297116
China is like America in that they have shit loads of room to expand.
And Shanghai has basically no natural barriers to constrain it.
>>60296830
That's a name.

>>60297282
I don't think any immigrants will be any significant in a country with a population of 1,3 billion. They need to fix they society, that's it.
>>60297183
>>60297116
That's essentially their central park.
And no. Their city planning is not inefficient. They just had a lot of room to expand outwards. I almost see them as suburban skyscrapers.
New York was like that in 1920. Then it filled in over time.
Shanghai will do the same.
>>60297116
Well, CBD's in general are often disjointed like that, it's not just a China thing. Problem is when the rest of the city is the same. The older areas like these ones >>60296104
are the only ones that appear to be truly urban.
It's a shame, really. Modern architecture with traditional and dense planning is the best.
>>60297419
>New York was like that in 1920

>>60297418
>>60297419
>New York was like that in 1920
New York was a proper city way before skyscrapers came, lad. The only difference is that tall buildings replaced the short buildings, planning and structure of the city is still the same.
>>60297419
>That's essentially their central park.
No it's not
Pudong isn't even the heart of Shanghai. It's a relatively new business district.
>>60297369
Every bit helps.
I'd start with issuing a Chinese ethnicity card to all overseas Chinese. Being able to visit China easier and immigrate their would be a godsend for a lot of overseas Chinese.
Immigration won't do much. But it'll be very useful in the 1st world cities that are aging rapidly.
China's two child policy is stupid. It's only in place still because there's 700,000 people working in the Ministry of Family Planning. They all want to continue doing abortions and managing the population, but it is killing China's future and pisses off so many people who want to have their second child in China.
If Xi had some balls he'd reverse its policies and turn it into a pro-natalist Ministry. It shouldn't be too hard to go from a smaller family planning Ministry to a larger family planning Ministry.
I'm starting to lose faith in the reformers. China is reforming, but too slowly for its own good.
>>60297437
>Well, CBD's in general are often disjointed like that, it's not just a China thing.
Any example of such a CBD outside of China?
>>60297419
>New York was like that in 1920.
no it wasn't
>>60297635
>If Xi had some balls he'd reverse its policies and turn it into a pro-natalist Ministry.
Xi certainly has balls, his anti-corruption campaign, he threw into a prison a former leader of security service, but it's not like he can do everything he is conflicted with some other faction rn(don't know the details though).
>>60297760
>>60297635
Good, I hope they continue their 1 child policy. There's enough of them already, and look at how badly they've poisoned their own country and overfished their seas so they're full of jellyfish now. Thanks to them we get hoards of literally millions of huge jellyfish that weigh a tonne each floating down the East Coast of Australia and ruining our beaches.
>>60297474
It was very much spread out in 1920. The city proper is the same size as back then.
But the population has added 4 million.
>>60297582
Essentially this. Shanghai will most likely follow a similar path with all the 50 foot tall apartments in the urban zone.
>>60297626

>>60297944
And as far as building density goes it was already completely filled.
>>60297768
I know I know. He has the power and has reformed a ton of bad things in China.
But that's one area that the proper answer to is obvious. China only added 40 million people since 2010. A two child policy is stupid.
Hopefully next year they remove it all together.
In Heliojang, Tibet, and Inner Mongolia they are loosening the policy to 3 children.
A 3 child policy would be far better than a 2 child policy. A lot of Chinese would have a third child in China. But the one child policy and two child policy make them go abroad to America to have their children.
It's just a stupid relic of the past. It was useful in 1980-2000. Not anymore though.
>>60297944
well technically yes but I think during the day the current Manhattan has a higher density
less people are living on Manhattan, but more are working then
>>60297806
They are already on the 2 child policy and are moving towards a 3 child policy in some provinces.
The average Chinese fertility is probably only 2. They need more kids.
India on the other hand is going to be a permanent shithole. It's looking like China without the 1 child policy.
>>60298039
well I guess so it's not like China is dealing with some extreme population, Chinese cities aren't even dense
but probably it'd be too much of a shock if they just removed it all together at once, I mean they want to kind of stay in control, maybe they are afraid of drammatical population growth
>>60297995
I meant this>>60297582

>>60297944
Manhattan != NYC.
>>60298007
Okay? That wasn't my point.
>>60298106
India isn't going fucking anywhere.
Some people already think that China is a new superpower, but India? Despite it's ENORMOUS population it's not more relevant than an average Western European country. I'm laughing at people who are saying "muh India will surpass China, they are growing faster now!!". Yes """""""""""""faster""""""""""""""'. When China was where India is now in terms of developement, it was growing for atleast 10%, while India doesn't even get close to that. And it's a fucking disaster, corrupted, dirty, totally unorganized failure.
Such is a democracy in 1 000 000 000 + state.
>>60298116
>they are afraid of drammatical population growth
China is currently facing a population crisis by around 2035 if they don't do something soon.
That is, assuming automation doesn't completely remove the need for a lower class population. Which could very well happen.
>>60298195
>Manhattan != NYC.
but we are talking about the central areas of Shanghai - Pudong, Puxi so naturally you would compare them to Manhattan.
>>60297794
>>60298116
The Ministry of Family Planning is powerful and doesn't want to lose 700,000 people whose entire life is built upon abortions and family planning.
But my proposal, and the proposal of a few other Chinese demographers, is to make the Ministry a pro-natalist ministry like Poland's or France's instead of an anti-natalist ministry.
This would provide jobs to the 700,000 people, while also allowing Chinese families to stop paying fines and to stop going abroad with their kids.
China in 2050 will be 46 on average. It's 36 today.
That's brutal for them.
I personally expect the two child policy to be completely removed sometime by 2020, but it honestly should be removed completely now.
Their 1990's baby boom is approaching birthing age, and if they can't have natural growth until 2020, China won't have another chance to fix their demography.

India is a shithole. And it will continue to be a shithole.
Every economist believes India's GDP growth rates are more like 5.5% a year. But their "statistics" are literally worse than China's.
For example, according to their stats agency 2013 growth got upgraded from 3% to 7% for no reason at all.
Meanwhile in 2013 India had a financial crisis, immense corruption crises, and exports fell dramatically.
Still, India has a lot of young people unlike China. India being shit won't help China.
China needs to fix its demographics and giving people the freedom to have kids is the best fix.

>>60298534
They changed it to a 2 child policy this year. And 3 if you remarry with a new partner.
For most Chinese that's all the kids they'll ever want to have.
But in three provinces they already moved to a limited 3 child policy. There' talk in Shanghai or removing it all together.
I'd worry more about India. It has worse pollution than China, and is still poorer than Iraq.

Not as extreme, but basically "tower in the park/field" planning is seen in your very picture. It's a thing in Yokohama too, and Dubai, and Brussels and whatever else. Basically just tall buildings that are needlessly detached from the city.
Frankfurt for example is a different case, where buildings are integrated into the pre-existing structure. Thing is that when there's no pre-existing structure, it's expected that things like that happen. Problem arises when parks or big highways are added, and you no longer can fill those gaps with much needed low-rises to help density with.

I'm not against detaching skyscrapers from existing city, sometimes it's really difficult to incorporate them into an existing urban structure, there are historical buildings to protect and oftenly such incorporating results in a fucking shitshow - example ? London. It's better when they build skyscrapers "out of the city" like in Paris/Moscow atleast then the designers and planners are able to arrange the buildings properly and densely pack them. Yes it doesn't look that good now - but in the years to come a new urban structure will naturally arise around the CBDs and it will look even better than some fucking clusterfuck into the middle of existing city.

Ahh yes.
Great cultural icons right there.
When I use my thinkpad I am constantly reminded of China's dominant culture.
>>60301303
fuck culture
>>60301190
>Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, Tencent
Literally who
>Lenovo
>a marginally famous laptop manufacturer is a cultural symbol
'ok'
>great bullet trains
How are these cultural symbols? They're obviously not unique to China nor did they invent them.
>>60301298
>you are joking right
I'm not including Chinese diaspora. Aside from them it's negligible, particularly outside of Asia.
>>60301020
>But communism destroyed a huge amount of culture
You can't destroy "culture".
>and left a vacuum that has resulted in the rampant western-philia you see now.
Maybe it has helped Western ideals.
I'd personally prefer CCP censorship being removed, but it's in no way a pervaisve policy.
Only .002% of internet articles are censored in China.
Like it or not, but the CCP is getting outrun by the forces of intellectual freedom in China.
In China today, we have a lot of revival movements of tradtional culture. Han imperial culture mainly.
>>60301488
>You can't destroy "culture".
Here's your (You)
>>60301583

What? These are all post-1980 phenomenon.

Culture (noun)
:the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
You literally cannot destroy culture.
rawr
>>60301742
what's it like?
>>60302017
Tell that to a descendant of any of the tens of thousands of cultures in human history that have been overrun/subjugated/surpressed by other cultures. For example the many ethnicities that the Han Chinese invaded and assimilated into their own.
>>60301943
I wouldn't call BHP Biliton or Rio Tinto Australian cultural icons, just as I wouldn't call those random companies you listed Chinese cultural icons. Lenovo is the only moderately famous one there, and most people probably don't even know it's Chinese.
Wow, just now got a sense of the scale on this thing.
Zoom in on the cantilever.
>>60302529
Where is this?
>>60301479
>>a marginally famous laptop manufacturer is a cultural symbol

you are simply ignorant

No, the Chinese internet has to be protected from the Western monopolies

>>60302453
Well, Billabong is pretty exquisitely Australian. Companies can actually be part of a nations identity, for better or worse. Think South Korea and Samsung.
>>60302674
Regardless, how is a laptop manufacturer a cultural symbol?
>>60302717
Why does every /urban/ thread devolve into you shilling for various despotic regimes around the world
You're a shit OP
>>60302245

hot, humid, messy, disordered, chaotic
>>60302836
>Regardless, how is a laptop manufacturer a cultural symbol?
geez literally what "culture" you even have in XXI century besides american pop and american movies? I honestly can't name any single "cultural symbol" of country other than the US and Japan
>>60302735
haha benis
>>60302836
>Why does every /urban/ thread devolve into you shilling for various despotic regimes around the world
>You're a shit OP
I'm only shilling for China I don't shill for any other regime
Also China isn't any regime, China is how a country and government actually should look like - not some circus populist contest called "democracy"
>>60302920

Movies, music, literature, architectural innovations, clothing, food etc.
>>60302965
You seem to have a proclivity towards glorifying some of the shitholes in the Middle East too.
>>60303054
>Movies, music, literature, architectural innovations, clothing, food etc.
and name any relevant movie, music, literature, architectural innovation of country other than the US or Japan (and Japan mostly because we are weebs here but actually Japan is not that important)
>food
>implying Chinese food isn't fucking everywhere
you are memeing right, every city in the West has a fuckton of Chinese restaurants
>You seem to have a proclivity towards glorifying some of the shitholes in the Middle East too.
>posting skylines of some Middle Eastern cities means I glorify these countries
anyway I'm not some delusional Westerner who thinks his culture and values are inherently superior to any other ones just because we've dominated the world since last 200-300 years
not everyone wants your liberal democracy and human rights bullshit, fucking accept that and let other civilizations follow their own rules
it's not like China is imposing internet censorship on Australia, they are not expansive in that regard
>>60303293
>and name any relevant movie, music, literature, architectural innovation
There are so many I wouldn't know where to begin. I mean you seriously don't know of any music outside of America? You're not the crunchiest peanut in the packet aren't you.
> fucking accept that and let other civilizations follow their own rules
Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of Chinese that regularly protest and riot against the government's totalitarian policies. Or does that not suit your narrative?
My qualms with China are it's reckless destruction of it's surrounding environment (including the sea) which is having direct effects upon the Australian climate and is causing a myriad of problems. Not to mention their aggressive and expansionist politics.
>it's not like China is imposing internet censorship on Australia, they are not expansive in that regard
Actually they do try to force their censorship on us you retarded contrarian faggot.

what protests, where?
>My qualms with China are it's reckless destruction of it's surrounding environment (including the sea) which is having direct effects upon the Australian climate and is causing a myriad of problems.
They recently went through their own industrial revolution, that was inevitable to damage the environment, Europe used to be polluted as fuck aswell
anyway now China is spending more on green energy than the US, UK and France combined

Led Zepellin, Coldplay, Radiohead, that's just the UK. Daft Punk, Leonard Cohen, Drake and Justin Beiber. I'm just rattling these off the top of my head, they're some of the most popular bands at the moment/of their time.
>>60304190
It's a shame the spiraling tower doesn't keep its shape all the way to the bottom. The big box it stands on is kind of sad.

I agree. It could also be a bit taller.
