We wash our eggs here so they don't have the protective layer that eggs in Europe do which means they spoil more quickly without proper refrigeration and preparation. The downside of not washing them is that egg-laying chickens that contract salmonella can leave the bacteria on the protective layer and it can enter the egg after a while if that shit stays on. Euros get around this by vaccinating all their egg-laying hens for salmonella whereas we just wash the eggs.
Also it's just a cultural thing. Salmonella isn't especially common in the US but we do have fears about it.
