They were supposed to put pressure on the enemy, draw his reserves into the fight and in general pin the german units down and force them into the fight across a broad front while fresh (reserve) units would explout the gaps and essentially bee-line for them no matter the consequences and disturb the enemy supply lines, take control of strategic points (cities, intersection, rail lines, communication centres, etc). Then a new front was established followed by a lull of a couple of months in fighting while all the new shit was shipped to the front and the soviets could repeat the process.

It is, however, very entertaining to me when simply talking about the soviet world war 2 doctrine makes me a bolshevik. Google "deep battle" or something to get a better understanding of the soviet side because only the uneducated and idiots think that the Soviet world war 2 doctrine boils down to a "zerg rush". If all the Soviets did was zerg rush they would've comfortably lost the war as you can't really do a zerg with 2:1 ratio. I mean even the often repeated (and very broad) military logic goes that you need at least 3:1 ratio to execute a successful assault against defensive positions.
The closes they got to a "zerg rush" was the Winter war for a variety of reasons, un-experienced officer core, the terrain being completely unsuited to mechanized forces (which is what the soviet doctrine was based on) and purely "coincidentally" using a bunch of Ukrainian, and other less than liked nationality, troops that didn't know what cold is as well as their retarded over confidence which made them believe it would be a pushover.
Also, Yugoland was never bolshevik, in fact "we" were the only "commies" that openly told Stalin to fuck off or get a bullet in him (Tito press).
