I'm not opposed in principle to the idea that you could change someone's sexuality. But that's because I don't believe sexuality is an enduring feature of an individual's essence/personality/genetics/ whatever you want to say.
Homosexuals are made just like straight people are made and I'm sure they can be changed. As for whether it's desirable to do so, or whether it is possible to do it effectively and deliberately given the current "medical knowledge" available, those are two totally different kinds of questions. The first is a political question and the second is some empirical question.

Yes, and it took a very loud and coordinated political movement to do that.
I don't think the move they made was correct, but that doesn't matter.
The same thing "born this way'you see it in other movements like for people with down's syndrome and other disabilities. They just claim that these things are due to natural human variation and that they must be as acceptable as having a birthmark or a mole.
But I think it's empirically false that people are born gay the same way people are born with down's syndrome or with a mole.
But it doesn't matter to me that these movements argue from empirically false grounds.

But a lot of people today think it's not necessary, and there is no therapy or treatment found that can change someone's sexual orientation permanently anyway.
the argument is ... what's illness and what's not is a matter of social acceptance?
Would a mother give a birth to her unborn child if she knew he would be born to be gay?
A lot of people choose abortion when they find their expected child to have downe syndrome.
Would that change if the society is more welcoming?

It doesn't bother me because they're making political power plays. That's their goal. To change the way people talk about things.
Even now you have more and more people on the fringes of these debates abandoning the born this way idea. People who are now much more open to the idea that in fact being gay is a perfectly valid political choice. And if they are clever enough, they will make themselves as mainstream as "born this way" is now.
That's why I think none of the empirical stuff matters. What matters is how these people are negotiating for power.
You can expect the medical books to change following what these political movements make the dominant current of thought.
Like they always have.

What I'm trying to say is that look. You had people fighting against the idea that being gay was a choice when the dominant idea was that being gay was evil. People said that gays are choosing sin. Then it became the general idea that being gay was something no one could be blamed for because people were simply born gay. But even though a victory was won in the sense that people no longer easily equate homosexuality with sin, it also meant that there was a new front to defend. Cause now you have people saying well people are born with all sorts of things and we can fix them. So why not homosexuality too.
So now we're back to people saying no lol being gay isn't something you can fix because it's either something so deeply ingrained we can't alter it or because it is actually a choice.
But that's exactly where we were before.
The only difference is that politically, we aren't as opposed to people making these choices. Only the political arguments have changed. Everything else, we've heard it all before.
