It really isn't difficult to acquire a second language when you're taught it in school from a young age and when there's plenty of media available in that language.

English is extremely ubiquitous. I grew up with English video games, English TV-shows and of course the internet.

To me it doesn't even feel like a foreign language. It feels like a second language that I grew up with, but although I grew up with it and speak it fluently I don't feel like I can speak it like a native. I have an accent and I'll never sound like a native speaker because I basically never speak English irl.

Many Finns do have a rather rough-sounding pronunciation, since our language is so far from many other European languages. Nowadays, it's more common to hear good speakers among us too. But there's no refuting that we are Europe's cream in writing English: we already have the hardest exams.
>>
>>60081445
Are you just bad with pronunciations?
Can you post vocaroo of you saving that and trying to say "Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of an airplane", "It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is out plan", or nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask"?
>>
>>60082631
I see what he's getting at. I'm in the process of learning German and I feel like I really need to dig in order to find anything worthwhile media that I can consume (music, TV-series, films, etc.) It requires an effort. If I didn't try to look for them explicitly I'd never know about them.

English on the other hand is there whether I like it or not. It's actually difficult to avoid English. That's how ubiquitous it is.

I think it's kind of sad that English media dominates the world so much.
>>
>>60082515
>Why are you trying so hard to be different?

>>60082557
I speak French and German. I've put an obscene amount of effort into finding good entertainment in those languages. There is some good French music. But the movies and tv-shows are invariably atrocious. (There are actually a few exceptions. But good French and German movies only come around two or three times a decade, whereas Americans release great stuff every year.)

Dubbing movies is a great way to ruin them. The fact that you seem to think that it's a good thing means that your opinions on the matter should be ignored.

You have no idea how wrong you are. Accents in Portuguese are not like accents in French, that just change the sound of the letter, and even if it was that case, it makes it easier to speak a word when you read it for the first time, but it's harder to learn for foreigns and more prone to mistakes when writing.

You definitely can think in a foreign language. I do it all the time and pretty often don't even realise I'm thinking in English. You also get some brainfarts when you're thinking of some specific phrase in English and then try to figure out a Finnish equivalent. Luckily everyone speaks English here so you can just say it out loud in English and people will get the gist of it.

I've recently started thinking in Japanese too, but to a lesser degree since I'm not fluent yet.

English is everywhere in parts of Europe. They learn it in school, they watch American TV and even some universities have lectures in English. Compare that to Anglo countries, where the most the average person does is a few years of French in high school. In general we don't have a culture of learning foreign languages and are apathetic towards them in general.

That being said, this is /int/ after all, and in an attempt to be less of the typical Anglo: Io sto imparando Italiano lentamente

Learning a language isn't actually that hard. Learning to speak it is a lot more difficult, but being able to write and read isn't.
>>
>>60092195
I suppose it's all because you may correct yourself while writing or take a minute to think better what to write.
The most hard thing is to think in a language, and it needs to be able to do both.

We sometimes use British spellings when we want to be snooty or high class. Often a live performance is RE, where as a movie theater uses the American spelling.

I took english classes for three years some time ago so I can obtain a Cambridge diploma to demonstrate I know english very good. Also the internet and other forms of media had a great influence in learning english.

Ironically, he should have. You use it to combine 2 sentences much like you would with a comma and a conjuction like and, or, but, et cetera. I don't get what's so "college educated" about them; the English classes I've taken focus all their time on writing and none on grammar.
