The Almohade caliph Al-mansur destituted Averroes from his offical function and then banned him and exiled in 1195.
Historians are not sure caliph banned him bcause he wanted to but rather there was both a lot of pressure from the religious establishment (the jurists or fuqaha' of the maliki madhab) and the people to silence him.
