Nobody ever actually comes into contact with the military here unless it's an ANZAC Day parade or something, so people are mostly apathetic besides a general thank you for stopping the boats attitude. I guess they mean to show their support at the human level, which is awesome, we definitely need to help homeless and suicidal vets. It sometimes gets forgotten that the military is just another extension of the government's power. The US loves soldiers, even if they are foreign soldiers from an allied nation like the UK or Canada. I was a Marine for a few years and if you went out in public with your uniform or fatigues on you were treated with respect. People even will say "thank you for your service." I didn't get why, it seemed like all I did was clean the barracks day in and day out.

I spent 25 years in our army after college. Lived and worked in 15 different countries, with deployments to Bosnia and Iraq.
When I was commissioned after university, most folks were indifferent to hostile toward us. Then the 1st Gulf War happened, and a combination of quick victory (over a 3rd world army) and brilliant media marketing, all of a sudden we were all "heroes" despite the fact 90% of the soldiers in the gulf never saw a shot fired in anger, and even those who did, only "fought" for 3 days.
The 90's continued, and the army was (rightly) seen as this huge, unnecessary force designed to stop the Russians in Europe. It had grown into a bloated welfare program for every ghetto and trailer trash single mother who could join for free benefits and very little work.
So, it got smaller, but not small enough. We knob-dicked through a bunch of shit-holes like Somalia and Bosnia like they were "real wars".
Then came 9-11. We went to Afghanistan and generally mucked about at first. We weren't prepared for the weather or terrain (that's YOU, 10th MT Div), and the rules of engagement kept us from actually putting the fear of allah in the talibs.
Then, into Iraq, where we once again won the "war" in about a week. Again too, the government and the media turned us into heroes...when only a very few ever shot or got shot at. The average soldier began to treat this adulation as an entitlement, and it became a cliche...for us career soldiers, and honestly, most of the public.
Today? The "war" is in its 13th year, nobody cares, and cowardly career senior officers and the current government have allowed special interests and social justice advocates to take over the army. People still have a vague feeling of pride about their army, but will be in for a rude shock when we get our asses handed to us in a real fight.
