This is Rockall.
This rock, about 480 km west of the Scottish Hebrides, is the top of a dead volcano.
In the old days seamen considered the rock possessed by demonic forces, possibly an old Celtic or Norse sea-god, forgotten by humans after christianity established itself over Europe, but still demanding blood-sacrifice.
In the old days many vessels were uncontrollably drawn towards this evil rock, causing plenty of lives extinguished. On of the more famous times was in 1904, when the SS Norge on a trip from Copenhagen to New York was fatally drawn towards this soletary rock, the most soletary rock in the world. 620 corpses floated around its base.
Today the UK, Ireland, Iceland and Denmark (in name of the Faroë Island) still have a dispute over the ownership of this rock of doom. Apparently a lot of gas and oil is to be found in the sea-bottom surrounding it.
