Here's what you do:
Start out with ginger beer. It's sweet, but with a hint of beer-taste.
Then move on to wheat beer. All the large German breweries make good wheat beer. You can't go wrong. Hefeweizen has a very low level of bitterness. And that's why I think it's a good way to get into beer.
You can start pairing it with food, too. Beer and pizza is always a good combination. Always.
Then move on to lagers and light ales. Kona makes something called Big Wave Golden Ale. Very light, goes down well, but with a defined taste. And nobody will give you shit for drinking it.
And then you can just try different things, and see what you like. I am still not a big fan of overly bitter beers. I've never gotten shit for it.
