Southern Kazakhstan is like Texas, there are plenty of moderate Kazakh patriots. Western Kazakhstan is full of radical Kazakh nationalists, many of them don't like Russians.
Northern Kazakhstan is more Russian-like area. Most of the people here speaks Russian as main language.
So, if you're Russian, you'll comfortable in Central and Northern Kazakhstan and also in Almaty (as yet). If you're modern open-minded Kazakh, you better live in Astana or Almaty. If you're Kazakh nazi, you'll enjoy Western Kazakhstan.

Here is a pic of "Beshbarmak", maybe the most famous Kazakh meal. It just the horse-flesh with cooked pieces of dough. It supposed to be eaten with fingers, its name can be translated as "five fingers" (a hand). It also could be served with broth in a soup-like form.

Other popular meal are baursak (fried dough), kazy and shuzhuk (sorts of sausage), kuyrdak (fried liver and hearts with fat). I'm not big expert in Kazakh food because most of Kazakhstan people don't eat it every day. Usually we eat Eastern European food: borsch, soups, kasha, cooked and fried potatoes, cutlets and so on. It's the same for Kazakhs and Russians.
Beshbarmak and other Kazakh meals are usually cooked only for holidays and other festive events.
