I specified "only the coastal areas". The lingua franca of trade was (Old) Low German back then. Finnish has a lot of loanwords from that too but it doesn't make Finns anything different, still Finns. Also the level of speaking Low German or Swedish/whatever wasn't very high since they only needed it for trade. It was a pidgin. Anyways what matters is what was spoken at home and that was Finnish for Finns everywhere in Finland and Swedish for the small minority of Swedes in the coastal areas. Finland as a whole isn't and never has been bilingual in the sense of having speakers of different languages in the same region. Finland would be bilingual with Karelian and Finnish speakers on the eastern side if Russia and Sweden weren't full of dicks though.

Vaasa had Swedes in there like the rest of Ostrobothnia. Wasn't that populous a few hundred years ago because the whole world had a much smaller population. Helsinki/Uusimaa region has emerged as a heavily populated area after Ruskies took over in 1800s. Before that the biggest city was Turku for a long time.
